The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has sealed off the operational premises of a major importer at Alaba International Market, Lagos, following alleged non-compliance with regulatory directives over the sale of a defective solar battery. The enforcement exercise, led by Dr. Olubunmi Otti, Southwest Zonal Coordinator of FCCPC, took place on Tuesday as the commission acted under Section 150(4)(a) of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA), 2018.

According to Dr. Otti, the action was prompted after the importer failed to respond to a compliance notice issued by FCCPC following an investigation into a consumer’s complaint. The matter originated from a customer who fully paid for a solar battery in February 2025 but later reported it as defective. FCCPC subsequently launched an investigation and invited both the importer and the company for discussions on several occasions.

Despite repeated invitations, the importer reportedly did not honour any of them. Dr. Otti stated that the commission later issued a formal summons to compel attendance, but this was also ignored. She emphasised that such disregard for regulatory processes undermines consumer protection standards in Nigeria’s growing renewable energy market.

“Our mandate is to ensure that consumers are not short-changed or exposed to unsafe products,” Otti said during the operation at Alaba market. She added that FCCPC will continue to enforce compliance among importers and retailers of solar products, especially as more Nigerians turn to alternative energy solutions due to unreliable grid supply.

The commission has advised affected consumers to formally lodge complaints where necessary and assured that further regulatory actions may follow if the company fails to address outstanding issues or cooperate with ongoing investigations.

Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), has disclosed the reason behind his decision to hand over power to a democratically-elected government within just eleven months in office. Speaking in Abuja on Sunday, Abdulsalami said his main motivation was to restore stability and set Nigeria on the path of democracy after prolonged military rule.

Abdulsalami, who took office following the death of General Sani Abacha in June 1998, oversaw a rapid transition process that culminated in the swearing-in of President Olusegun Obasanjo on 29 May 1999. The former leader explained that Nigeria was at a crossroads at the time, and there was urgent need to end military intervention in governance.

He noted that Nigerians had become weary of repeated coups and instability, and that confidence in the country’s leadership had eroded. “I realised that the nation needed healing and a sense of direction. We had spent too long under military regimes, and it was clear that only a return to civilian rule would restore hope,” Abdulsalami said during an interactive session.

The retired general added that his administration’s swift timetable for elections was deliberate, as he wanted to avoid any suspicion or accusations of self-perpetuation. The protest, which saw youths and community members blocking access to several oil installations in Warri South-West Local Government Area, began last week over demands for improved development and increased resource control.
