Provost confirms valuables stolen as police, homeland security respond swiftly to incident at Ohaukwu LGA institution

Nine students of Ebonyi College of Health Science and Technology, Ngbo, in Ohaukwu Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, were injured when suspected hoodlums invaded the female hostel in the early hours of 8 June. The Provost of the college, Chetachi Usulor, confirmed the incident to journalists on Tuesday, stressing that no student was missing after the attack.

According to Usulor, the attackers stormed the hostel while students were sleeping, demanding valuables from those inside. She stated that the hoodlums made away with mobile phones, cash, ATM cards and other personal belongings belonging to students before fleeing. “I called the police control room, the divisional police headquarters and homeland security personnel. As people started arriving at the scene, the hoodlums fled,” Usulor recounted.

This incident has heightened concerns about campus safety in Ebonyi State and across South-East Nigeria. Security breaches targeting tertiary institutions have become more frequent in recent years, prompting calls for improved surveillance and community policing around student hostels and school premises.

The Provost explained that following prompt notification of authorities, security agencies including police and homeland security operatives arrived at the scene but could not apprehend any suspects as at press time. She assured parents and guardians that efforts are ongoing to ensure students’ safety and prevent further attacks. No lives were lost in the incident.

While police investigations continue, college management has appealed for increased security presence around the institution. Stakeholders in education have also urged state authorities to prioritise protection of students and staff within learning environments.
