President Bola Tinubu on Thursday, 12 June 2026, conferred national honours on dozens of activists, journalists, civil society leaders, and military officers at a ceremony in Abuja to mark this year’s Democracy Day. The awardees were recognised for their roles in Nigeria’s prolonged battle to restore democratic rule, especially during the aftermath of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election.
The President’s announcement came during his Democracy Day address at the Presidential Villa, where he acknowledged individuals who faced persecution, exile, detention and other forms of hardship as a result of their pro-democracy activities. Among those named were Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, Joe Igbokwe, Chief Ralph Obiora, Debo Adeniran, Richard Akinnola, Major-General Ishola Williams (rtd), Babajide Kolade-Otitoju and Ike Okonta. Posthumous honours were also given to Dr Arthur Nwankwo and Ben Charles-Obi for their contributions to the struggle.
This gesture comes as Nigeria marks 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance. Tinubu noted that many doubted whether democracy could endure in such a diverse nation. “Fellow Nigerians, 27 years ago, many doubted democracy would survive here because of our diversity. Today, our diversity sustains our democracy,” Tinubu said during his speech.
The honours extended beyond activists and journalists to include several retired military officers whom Tinubu described as “soldier-democrats.” Names announced included Major General MA Garba, Brigadier General Lawal Jaafaru Isa, Colonel Sambo Dasuki, Colonel Musa Shehu and others recognised for defending democratic ideals during periods of military rule.
According to Tinubu’s statement: “I am also pleased to announce national awards to the following Nigerians who suffered persecution… so that we have democracy today.” The President revealed that the full list of recipients and their specific national honours would be published in the coming days. The move has been welcomed by civil society groups as overdue recognition for those who risked their liberty for Nigeria’s return to civilian rule.

According to court proceedings, the EFCC’s witness described how the accused, whose name was not disclosed in open session, allegedly defrauded a foreign national through an elaborate romance scam valued at $41,000 (over ₦61 million at current exchange rates). The witness recounted that during investigations, the suspect claimed he was untouchable by Nigerian law enforcement agencies.
The case highlights growing concerns among stakeholders about the proliferation of online scams targeting individuals abroad, with Nigeria’s anti-graft agency intensifying efforts to secure convictions and recover illicit proceeds. The EFCC has repeatedly warned Nigerians about engaging in internet fraud schemes and urged citizens to report suspicious activities.
During cross-examination, the defence challenged aspects of the evidence presented. The presiding judge adjourned further hearing to a later date for continuation of trial. The EFCC maintains that it will pursue all legal avenues to ensure justice is served in cases of cybercrime.
If convicted, the accused faces significant jail time under Nigeria’s anti-fraud laws. The case underscores ongoing government efforts to restore Nigeria’s image internationally and deter would-be offenders from engaging in cyber-enabled crimes.
