Nofisat Abisola Muhammed advocates for artificial insemination and semen cryopreservation to tackle food insecurity across Nigeria

Efforts to strengthen food security and sustainable agriculture in Nigeria have gained momentum as animal reproductive biotechnology emerges as a key driver for livestock productivity. In Lagos, on Thursday, animal reproductive physiologist and biotechnology researcher, Nofisat Abisola Muhammed, called for the adoption of advanced breeding techniques—including artificial insemination and semen cryopreservation—to help farmers achieve better yields while ensuring animal welfare.

Muhammed, whose research focuses on reproductive physiology and fertility preservation in livestock, said technologies such as sperm quality assessment and assisted reproduction are transforming farming practices across the country. According to her, “These methods not only improve breeding efficiency but also support environmental sustainability and animal health,” she stated during a scientific engagement session in Lagos.

The push comes as Nigeria faces mounting pressure to feed its growing population, with demand for animal protein rising sharply. Experts warn that traditional breeding methods may no longer be sufficient to meet national needs or global standards. Muhammed explained that innovations in cattle, goat, and poultry reproduction are crucial if Nigeria is to close the gap between domestic supply and consumption of meat, milk, and eggs.

While some local farmers have started using artificial insemination on a small scale, uptake remains low due to limited access to training and technology. “There is need for government intervention to train extension workers and subsidise modern equipment,” Muhammed urged. She noted that successful models in other countries show that strategic investment can boost livestock output without compromising environmental goals.

Agricultural stakeholders say integrating biotechnology into mainstream livestock production could help stabilise prices of protein-rich foods and reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imports. The Ministry of Agriculture is expected to review policy guidelines on assisted reproduction later this year. For now, experts like Muhammed continue to champion research-driven solutions they believe will secure the nation’s food future.

The decisive clash in Nigeria’s oldest football competition will determine the country’s representative for next season’s CAF Confederation Cup

El-Kanemi Warriors of Borno State and Lagos-based Ikorodu City are preparing for a high-stakes battle as they meet in the final of the President Federation Cup, Nigeria’s oldest football knockout competition. The showdown, scheduled for Wednesday, 17 June 2026, will determine who lifts this year’s prestigious trophy and secures continental football next season.

Both clubs advanced through a series of tough fixtures to book their places in the final. El-Kanemi Warriors, with a history of strong performances in Nigerian domestic football, will be seeking to add another major title to their cabinet. Ikorodu City, a team that has steadily climbed the ranks in recent seasons, is looking to make history by clinching their first Federation Cup crown.

The President Federation Cup, formerly known as the FA Cup and later Aiteo Cup, remains a crucial event on Nigeria’s football calendar. The winner not only claims silverware but also earns the right to represent Nigeria in the CAF Confederation Cup. With this added incentive, both teams are expected to approach the final with determination and tactical discipline.

Officials from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have assured that all necessary arrangements have been made to ensure a smooth and fair contest. Security measures will be heightened at the venue as fans from Borno and Lagos converge to cheer their teams. As at press time, neither club had released official statements on their matchday squads, but anticipation is running high among supporters on both sides.

The outcome of this encounter will have significant implications for both clubs’ ambitions on the domestic and continental stage. Whichever side emerges victorious will carry Nigeria’s hopes into African competition next season.

Arrival of Italian chef in Victoria Island signals fresh push for international recognition in Nigeria’s hospitality sector

The Delborough Lagos, a leading luxury hotel located in Victoria Island, has announced the arrival of Michelin-starred chef Sauro Bison to head its signature dining destination, DANI Restaurant. The move was confirmed by the hotel management on Tuesday, marking a significant step in the ongoing quest to position Lagos as a top-tier destination for world-class hospitality experiences.

According to the announcement, Chef Bison’s appointment is expected to elevate both the culinary standards and profile of The Delborough Lagos, further enhancing its reputation for luxury and premium service. The Italian chef, celebrated internationally for his innovative cuisine and prestigious accolades, is now set to lead the culinary team at DANI Restaurant. Hotel representatives described his arrival as a milestone that underscores their commitment to bringing global excellence to Nigeria’s hospitality industry.
