Nigeria’s headline inflation climbed for the third month in a row, reaching 15.93 per cent in May 2026, according to the latest data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Monday. The sustained increase, which affects states across all six geopolitical zones, comes as food prices, transportation costs, and essential services continue to rise sharply.
The NBS report showed inflation moved up from 15.69 per cent in April to 15.93 per cent in May, marking a reversal from last year’s trend when rates consistently declined for nine months after the consumer price index (CPI) was rebased. The upward trend began in March when inflation rose from 15.06 per cent in February to 15.38 per cent, ending an eleven-month streak of falling rates.
Rising costs of food and beverages, transportation, housing, energy, health, and education have been identified as the main drivers of inflation nationwide. These sectors account for about 87 per cent of headline inflation, underscoring the pressure faced by ordinary Nigerians who spend most of their incomes on basic needs. Analysts say these persistent increases are eroding purchasing power and making it more difficult for families to meet daily expenses.
Despite mounting concerns from economists and households alike, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) dismissed fears that inflation could spiral out of control during its May Monetary Policy Committee meeting. CBN officials attributed recent price pressures to global shocks and supply chain disruptions but maintained that monetary policy measures were adequate to manage the situation.
Economic experts have warned that unless urgent steps are taken to address structural bottlenecks—especially in agriculture and energy—the current trajectory could undermine government’s target of achieving a $1 trillion economy. They also called on government at all levels to prioritise value addition and investments that will ease supply constraints in key sectors.
