Police operatives in Anambra State have arrested four individuals in connection with the alleged killing of a 23-year-old woman, whose body was discovered in a shallow grave after her abductors reportedly demanded a ₦2 million ransom from her family. The incident occurred earlier this week in the South-East state, with the authorities confirming the arrests on Monday.
According to the Anambra State Police Command, the investigation began when concerned members of the public provided credible information about suspicious activity relating to the victim’s disappearance. Spokesperson for the command, Tochukwu Ikenga, said police detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) apprehended Ifechukwu Okechukwu, aged 33, described as the primary suspect and alleged boyfriend of the deceased. Three other suspects were also detained during subsequent operations.
The matter has generated concern among residents and highlights ongoing issues around kidnapping and violent crime in Anambra and across Nigeria’s South-East. The discovery of the victim’s body by sympathisers who assisted police underscores public anxiety over personal safety and law enforcement’s capacity to respond swiftly to such cases.
In his official statement released to journalists, Ikenga commended local vigilance and cooperation with security agencies. “We appreciate members of the public for their timely information which led to exposing this criminal act and apprehending those involved,” he stated. Ikenga added that investigations are ongoing to determine if any ransom payment was made before the murder occurred.
Police authorities have assured residents that all suspects will be prosecuted according to law upon completion of investigations. Community leaders are urging continuous collaboration with security agencies, while calls have intensified for more robust policing measures in Anambra and neighbouring states affected by similar incidents.

A Federal High Court in Katsina State has sentenced Hauwa’u Mukhtar to death by hanging after convicting her of smuggling 438 rounds of ammunition intended for a notorious bandit kingpin in Zamfara State. The court delivered its verdict on Monday, following her arrest by Department of State Services (DSS) operatives at Jibia Motor Park on 16 September 2023.
According to the prosecution, Mukhtar was apprehended while attempting to transport 438 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, with intelligence reports indicating the deadly cargo was meant for a bandit leader identified simply as ‘Ado’, who is believed to operate from the Dunburum Forest in Zamfara. The DSS charged her with conspiracy to commit terrorism and aiding terrorist activities.
This case has drawn national attention due to the growing trend of women being recruited by criminal logistics networks supplying arms and ammunition to bandit groups across Nigeria’s North-West region. Security analysts say the successful conviction marks one of the most significant terrorism-linked cases involving a female suspect in recent years, as authorities work to disrupt supply lines fueling insecurity.
Presiding judge, Justice A.B. Bawale, ruled that the prosecution presented overwhelming evidence against Mukhtar, including witness testimonies and physical exhibits of the seized ammunition. The court found her guilty on both counts and imposed the maximum penalty under the Katsina State Penal Code Law, 2021. The defence’s arguments were rejected in their entirety.
Security officials have described Mukhtar’s sentence as a strong deterrent for those aiding armed groups. A senior DSS officer, speaking after the judgment, said: “This should serve as a warning that anyone caught supporting terrorists will face the full consequences of the law.” Legal observers note that Mukhtar’s legal team may yet file an appeal, but authorities maintain that stiffer sentences are needed as part of broader efforts to curtail banditry and restore peace across affected communities.

The reform process, which began after consultations with industry operators and fintech firms in Lagos on Monday, is expected to address longstanding concerns over inconsistent tax regimes and overlapping federal and state-level regulations. Industry observers say the current system creates high compliance costs and legal uncertainty for licensed operators, making it difficult to project profit margins or plan long-term expansions.
Nigeria’s gambling sector has grown rapidly in recent years, driven by a young population, strong football culture, mobile-first habits and a thriving fintech ecosystem. However, stakeholders maintain that growth alone is not enough to guarantee investment. “Operators need clear licensing rules, consistent tax obligations and robust player protection standards,” a senior official at a leading betting company told our correspondent. Financial service providers have also stressed that improved guidelines would help them partner more confidently with gaming platforms.
According to experts, a well-defined tax framework could distinguish regulated brands from offshore or unlicensed competitors who often evade taxes and consumer protection laws. However, analysts caution that excessive taxation might push players towards unregulated sites offering fewer safeguards and less revenue for government.
The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has said any new system would focus on equitable revenue collection while supporting responsible gambling initiatives. “We are working towards a fair regime that encourages investment without exposing Nigerians to undue risk,” an FIRS spokesperson stated during the session.
