Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen has expressed deep regret over Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the ongoing FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, marking the second consecutive time the national team will miss football’s biggest stage. Osimhen spoke during a social media livestream on Tuesday, highlighting how both he and his teammates feel disappointed by the outcome.

Nigeria missed out on qualification after finishing behind South Africa, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Benin Republic in their group. Despite an opening win against Gabon in the playoffs, the Super Eagles lost their final chance to DR Congo in a penalty shootout, ending any hopes of appearing at the 2026 Mundial.

The development has sparked fresh debate among Nigerian football stakeholders. Many fans and analysts have called for sweeping changes within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), blaming repeated administrative failures for back-to-back World Cup absences. Osimhen, who recently joined Galatasaray after a stint with Napoli, said his fellow Super Eagles players share his frustration. “I feel bad not playing at the World Cup… this is the second time in a row. I was talking with the other guys, and they feel the same way, but we move,” Osimhen said during his livestream.

Of all current Super Eagles stars, only Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho have played at a previous Mundial, having featured in Russia 2018. With growing pressure on NFF officials to resign or overhaul their approach ahead of future competitions, many supporters fear another long wait before Nigeria returns to football’s highest level.
