The Nigerian Police Force has reiterated that bail remains free in all police stations across Lagos State and the country, warning officers against demanding money from citizens seeking the release of suspects in bailable offences. This announcement was made on Thursday following renewed public outcry over alleged extortion by police personnel, with many Nigerians expressing doubts about the effectiveness of the ‘Bail Is Free’ initiative.
In a video circulated online, a senior police officer clarified that bail is an administrative process that allows suspects to leave custody while investigations continue, provided a reliable surety is present. The officer stated, “Bail is a process in a criminal investigation where a suspect is released to a reliable surety to produce him back whenever needed. Bail is not a punishment. Bail is not a sentence. So, the Nigerian law does not permit anyone to collect money for bail.”
Despite repeated campaigns and visible banners in many police stations declaring bail to be free, reports persist of Nigerians paying between ₦50,000 and ₦1 million under the guise of ‘mobilisation fees’ or ‘administrative charges.’ Many citizens remain sceptical about the policy’s enforcement due to longstanding allegations of police extortion and brutality nationwide.
To address these concerns, police authorities have urged any Nigerian who is asked to pay for bail to report immediately by calling 080-570-00001. The dedicated hotline was set up specifically for complaints against officers involved in illegal collection of money for bail. “Rather than argue with any officer at the station, we encourage citizens to use this complaint line so appropriate action can be taken,” the officer advised in the video.
Legal experts note that proper bail procedure requires only a surety and completion of paperwork by an Investigating Police Officer (IPO), with no cash transaction involved. The bail bond—a written guarantee ensuring suspects appear when required—costs nothing under Nigerian law.
As at Thursday afternoon, no official figures were released on disciplinary actions taken against offending officers in Lagos or elsewhere. However, civil society groups have called for greater transparency and stricter enforcement to ensure compliance by rank-and-file personnel. The Police Service Commission did not respond to requests for comment as at press time.

An official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has described the conduct of the Ekiti State governorship election as peaceful, highlighting the role of security agencies in maintaining order across polling units on Saturday, 20 June 2026. The assessment comes as voting concluded in all local government areas of the South-West state.
According to INEC, the exercise was free from major disturbances, with security personnel deployed at strategic locations to prevent any outbreak of violence or voter intimidation. Voters were able to cast their ballots in an orderly manner, and electoral officers reported smooth logistics and timely arrival of materials at most centres.
The peaceful atmosphere marks a significant improvement compared to previous elections in some parts of Nigeria, where polling has often been marred by disruptions and reports of ballot box snatching. Popular Nigerian skit maker, Jubril Oladapo Gbadamosi, known as Officer Woos, has threatened legal action against individuals behind viral social media claims alleging his arrest by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) over drug trafficking. The incident, which trended widely on platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), reportedly originated from anonymous posts accusing Officer Woos of importing cocaine-laced bread and brownies from Mexico to Lagos in 2025.
Officer Woos, through his legal representatives Versed Attorneys, described the allegations as entirely false and fabricated. In a formal statement released on Thursday in Lagos, his lawyers stated that Gbadamosi has never been arrested, investigated, or charged with any drug-related offence by NAFDAC or any other authority. The legal team further accused the originators of the rumour of orchestrating a “deliberate and malicious campaign” aimed at damaging their client’s reputation.
The controversy gained momentum after a tweet on 18 June 2026 claimed that Officer Woos had been detained by NAFDAC since 2025 for alleged drug trafficking. The post also suggested he stopped creating content to focus on a supposed bread business. However, Versed Attorneys firmly refuted both claims, clarifying that Officer Woos has not made any announcement regarding the death of an associate or changed his professional activities due to legal trouble.
According to the statement signed by his legal counsel, “Our client categorically denies the said publications in their entirety and demands an immediate and unconditional retraction from all pages, handles, and individuals responsible for the publication and circulation of these false statements.” The lawyers warned that failure to issue a public apology within forty-eight hours would trigger civil proceedings for damages under Nigerian defamation law and petitions to relevant law enforcement agencies under the Cybercrimes Act.
The case highlights growing concerns over misinformation targeting public figures on social media in Nigeria. While neither NAFDAC nor any regulatory body has issued any official comment on the incident as at press time, Officer Woos’s legal team insisted they would pursue all available remedies should defamatory content continue to circulate. Nigerians have been urged by the lawyers to disregard unverified claims online and rely only on credible sources.
