Anchoria MD Says Retail Investors Boost Daily Turnover to ₦50bn in Nigeria’s Stock Market
Folagbade Adeyemi attributes surge in retail trading to improved technology, rising risk appetite, and shifting demographics
Folagbade Adeyemi attributes surge in retail trading to improved technology, rising risk appetite, and shifting demographics
Retail investors have now overtaken institutional capital as the main driver of Nigeria’s equities market, with daily turnover rising from below ₦3 billion to between ₦30 billion and ₦50 billion per session. This was disclosed by Folagbade Adeyemi, Managing Director of Anchoria Securities Limited, during a market briefing in Lagos on Monday.
Adeyemi, who has 18 years’ experience in capital markets and securities trading, explained that retail participation has maintained a consistent level in the mid-thirties as a percentage of overall activity, even as volumes have increased sharply over recent months. He described this shift as both structural and irreversible for the Nigerian capital market.
He said the change is mainly due to renewed confidence among individual investors following years of caution, alongside better access to technology and real-time market information. “Retail capital has established itself as a permanent force within the Nigerian capital market. It is influencing liquidity, shaping expectations, and increasingly determining outcomes,” Adeyemi said at the briefing.
According to him, younger demographics are also accelerating this trend at a rate that would otherwise have taken much longer. He noted that unlike institutional investors who are often restricted by large mandates or regulatory conditions, retail traders are responding swiftly to market opportunities and shaping price movements.
Market analysts believe this development could lead to greater liquidity and more stable pricing across listed securities. However, some stakeholders caution that higher retail activity could also bring volatility if not matched with adequate investor education and regulation. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is expected to continue monitoring the trend as part of its oversight responsibilities.

Belgium’s Doku Welcomes Baby Boy Days After World Cup Squad Exit
Winger left national team camp amid controversy; Belgian FA yet to clarify circumstances of his departure
Winger left national team camp amid controversy; Belgian FA yet to clarify circumstances of his departure
Belgian international footballer Jeremy Doku has welcomed a baby boy just days after his sudden and controversial exit from the Belgium national team camp at the ongoing FIFA World Cup. The development occurred in Belgium’s base camp, where Doku left earlier this week under circumstances that have sparked debate among fans and commentators.
Doku, who has been a key player for Belgium, departed the squad unexpectedly, prompting speculation about the reasons behind his absence. Reports indicate that his exit was linked to personal matters, which have now been confirmed with the birth of his child. The Belgian Football Association is yet to issue an official statement explaining the details of Doku’s departure from the World Cup squad.
The timing of Doku’s exit raised questions within Belgian football circles and among supporters, given the importance of the tournament and his role in the team’s attacking setup. Several observers had called for transparency from team officials regarding the situation, especially as Belgium continues its campaign without one of its most dynamic wingers.
As at Tuesday, no formal comment has been made by Doku himself or by senior officials from the Belgian Football Association on whether he will be recalled to the squad or if disciplinary action will follow. Football analysts say the development could have implications for squad morale and Belgium’s performance at this critical stage of the World Cup.
Further updates are expected from Belgian authorities in coming days as supporters await more information on both Doku’s situation and any possible impact on team selection going forward.

Nigerian music sensation Asake delivered an exclusive one-night-only performance of his latest project, ‘M$NEY’, in partnership with Spotify at a special event held in London on Tuesday. The showcase marked a significant milestone for the Lagos-born artist as he continues to gain international recognition for his unique afro-fusion sound.

European side secures comfortable win as group stage continues; match highlights dominant French performance
France recorded a convincing 3–0 victory over Iraq in a FIFA World Cup group stage encounter played on Tuesday, 23 June 2026. The match, which took place at an international venue, saw the French team assert their dominance from the opening whistle, leaving Iraq with little room to respond.
The French side controlled possession throughout the game and capitalised on their attacking opportunities to secure all three points. By halftime, France had already established a lead, and they maintained pressure in the second half to widen the gap. The Iraqi team struggled to break down the organised French defence and was unable to find a way back into the contest.
This result is significant for France as it strengthens their position in the group and increases their chances of progressing to the knockout rounds of the competition. For Iraq, the defeat adds pressure ahead of their remaining group fixtures as they seek to keep their hopes alive in the tournament.
Both teams are expected to return to training immediately as they prepare for their upcoming matches. The outcome of this fixture will likely influence tactical approaches and squad selections moving forward in the FIFA World Cup.
