Firm eyes Prime Minister’s Cup in Barbados and CANEX Summit in Lagos to connect grassroots talents with international scouts

Cleaques Sports, a technology-driven sports platform based in Lagos, has announced fresh plans to connect grassroots athletes from across Africa and the Caribbean with global sporting opportunities through its expanding digital ecosystem. The announcement was made on Monday by Saint Agomeze, Vice President for Strategic Partnerships and Ecosystem Growth, during a briefing in Lagos.

According to Agomeze, Cleaques Sports is working to create new pathways for talented African athletes by leveraging digital tools that enhance visibility, scouting and professional career development. As part of the initiative, the company is exploring participation in the Prime Minister’s Cup holding in Barbados, which will provide homegrown players with international exposure and a chance to compete before top global scouts and audiences.

Agomeze further disclosed that Cleaques Sports will also take part in the 2026 Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) Summit scheduled to hold in Lagos. He explained that the summit will serve as a strategic platform for engaging investors, sports organisations, governments, brands and media institutions towards creating new channels for African athletes to access professional opportunities beyond the continent.

“Our long-term vision is to build a leading digital sports ecosystem that transforms local talents into globally recognised athletes while strengthening Africa’s position within the international sports market,” Agomeze said.

Also speaking at the event, Tolu Ajayi, Vice President for Business Development at Cleaques Sports, described the platform as an integrated digital system designed to support event organisers, promoters, businesses and content creators. He noted that partnerships formed through such events as CANEX are crucial for accelerating sports development across Africa.

Cleaques Sports says it will continue to pursue collaborations aimed at bridging the gap between grassroots talent and global professional opportunities. Stakeholders in Nigeria’s sports sector have welcomed the move as a timely intervention that could help nurture more world-class athletes from local communities.

Presidency Rejects Obi’s Call for Tinubu’s Resignation Amid Political Tensions

Presidential aides dismiss Labour Party leader’s demand, say President Tinubu remains focused on governance priorities

The Presidency has dismissed recent calls by Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi for President Bola Tinubu to resign, insisting that the president will not step down and remains committed to delivering on his mandate. The statement was made in Abuja on Tuesday by senior officials in response to growing criticism from opposition figures.

According to the Presidency, Obi’s suggestion that Tinubu should vacate office is baseless and does not reflect the current realities in Nigeria’s political landscape. The officials stated that the president continues to focus on implementing his administration’s policies and addressing national challenges, including economic reforms and security operations across various regions.

The call by Obi comes at a time of heightened political rivalry following the 2023 general elections, where Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) emerged victorious. Opposition parties, particularly the LP and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have continued to challenge aspects of the electoral process and question government performance on key issues such as inflation, unemployment, and security incidents across several states.

In their reaction, presidential aides reiterated that the president remains undeterred by what they described as “distractions” from aggrieved opposition leaders. They urged Nigerians to support ongoing reforms while assuring that government will continue to prioritise the welfare of citizens. “President Tinubu is committed to fulfilling his promises and will not be swayed by calls lacking constitutional backing,” one official said in Abuja.

There has been no immediate response from Obi or LP officials following the Presidency’s statement. Analysts say such exchanges are likely to intensify as Nigeria heads into another cycle of political activities ahead of forthcoming state-level elections.

Winger left national team camp amid controversy; Belgian FA yet to clarify circumstances of his departure

Belgian international footballer Jeremy Doku has welcomed a baby boy just days after his sudden and controversial exit from the Belgium national team camp at the ongoing FIFA World Cup. The development occurred in Belgium’s base camp, where Doku left earlier this week under circumstances that have sparked debate among fans and commentators.

Doku, who has been a key player for Belgium, departed the squad unexpectedly, prompting speculation about the reasons behind his absence. Reports indicate that his exit was linked to personal matters, which have now been confirmed with the birth of his child. The Belgian Football Association is yet to issue an official statement explaining the details of Doku’s departure from the World Cup squad.

The timing of Doku’s exit raised questions within Belgian football circles and among supporters, given the importance of the tournament and his role in the team’s attacking setup. Several observers had called for transparency from team officials regarding the situation, especially as Belgium continues its campaign without one of its most dynamic wingers.

As at Tuesday, no formal comment has been made by Doku himself or by senior officials from the Belgian Football Association on whether he will be recalled to the squad or if disciplinary action will follow. Football analysts say the development could have implications for squad morale and Belgium’s performance at this critical stage of the World Cup.

Further updates are expected from Belgian authorities in coming days as supporters await more information on both Doku’s situation and any possible impact on team selection going forward.

Nigerian afro-fusion star collaborates with global streaming platform for one-night-only event spotlighting new project

Nigerian music sensation Asake delivered an exclusive one-night-only performance of his latest project, ‘M$NEY’, in partnership with Spotify at a special event held in London on Tuesday. The showcase marked a significant milestone for the Lagos-born artist as he continues to gain international recognition for his unique afro-fusion sound.

The London performance, organised by Spotify, brought together fans and industry stakeholders to experience Asake’s newest tracks live. The collaboration underscores Spotify’s ongoing commitment to promoting African talent on the global stage, with Asake seen as one of the continent’s most prominent musical exports in recent years.

Asake’s rise has been closely followed by Nigerian audiences and the diaspora, with previous releases topping local charts and earning him multiple award nominations. His partnership with Spotify for the ‘M$NEY’ event is expected to open up further opportunities for other Nigerian artists seeking global exposure through digital platforms.

Neither Asake nor representatives from Spotify provided immediate comment following the performance. However, industry observers have noted that such high-profile collaborations signal growing investment in African music markets by international tech and streaming firms.

With Afrobeats and related genres attracting increasing attention worldwide, stakeholders expect more partnerships between Nigerian artists and global companies in the coming months. The success of Asake’s exclusive event may serve as a template for future album launches and live showcases beyond Nigeria’s borders.
