Nestlé Nigeria and a coalition of environmental partners have recovered a total of 4,556 kilogrammes of waste during the 2026 World Environment Day community sensitisation and clean-up campaign held across Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt and eight other major cities. The exercise took place in June with participation from 424 volunteers, targeting public spaces in a coordinated push for responsible waste management.
According to figures provided by African Clean-Up Initiative (ACI) and the Recyclers Association of Nigeria (RAN), the campaign netted 4,507.8kg of solid waste and 48.2kg of recyclable materials in locations including Agbara, Jos, Enugu, Awka, Ota, Abaji, Sagamu and Ibadan. The organisers said the collected waste was channelled into approved recycling and disposal pathways to reduce pollution and keep communities cleaner.
The clean-up drive was part of activities marking World Environment Day 2026 and aimed to raise public awareness about the impact of poor waste management on health and local economies. With flooding and plastic pollution increasingly affecting urban areas in Nigeria’s South-West and North-West zones, stakeholders say such initiatives are vital for environmental protection.
Corporate Affairs Manager Toju Egbebi stated in a signed statement that the initiative demonstrates Nestlé’s commitment to environmental stewardship. “By collaborating with our partners and local communities across multiple states, we are supporting broader efforts to reduce waste leakage into the environment,” Egbebi said. Representatives from ACI and RAN also called for more support from both government agencies and private sector actors to ensure long-term results.
The coalition plans to scale up community sensitisation campaigns on proper disposal practices in coming months. Environmental advocates say ongoing engagement is needed if Nigeria is to meet national targets on recycling rates and address chronic waste challenges affecting cities nationwide.

The 2026 cycle began in April with the Asian Continental Stage held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, where 26 teams from 19 countries participated.
