The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Ogun State has arrested 306 suspects and prosecuted 64 individuals for drug-related offences between January and May 2026. State Commander Tijjani Rabe disclosed these figures on Wednesday during a press briefing to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which held across Nigeria.
According to Rabe, the suspects apprehended within the five-month period included 272 males and 34 females. He added that out of those arrested, 140—comprising 136 males and four females—were counselled as part of the agency’s rehabilitation efforts. The command also confiscated significant quantities of illicit substances: 2,518.16 kilogrammes of cannabis sativa, 86.74 kilogrammes of methamphetamine, cocaine and tramadol, along with 44.90 litres of codeine syrup and 171.50 litres of skuchies and monkey tail.
Providing further context, Rabe compared this year’s enforcement figures to those from the previous year. In 2025, Ogun NDLEA arrested a total of 771 suspects (650 males and 121 females), with 318 individuals receiving counselling and 159 persons convicted for various drug offences. The commander attributed ongoing arrests to persistent drug trafficking networks in the South-West zone, while highlighting the agency’s resolve to break supply chains through targeted operations.
“Our focus is not just on enforcement but also on public education and rehabilitation for offenders willing to turn a new leaf,” Rabe stated at the briefing. He said the agency has intensified its sensitisation campaigns across communities in Ogun State as part of this year’s anti-drug theme: ‘The World Drug Problem: Persistent Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses.’
Meanwhile, Sokoto State has renewed its anti-drug campaign by scaling up public enlightenment activities aimed at discouraging youth involvement in substance abuse. NDLEA officials in Sokoto reaffirmed their commitment to collaborate with local stakeholders to sustain momentum against illicit drugs. As at press time, no opposition party had commented on the latest enforcement figures or ongoing campaigns.
NDLEA authorities say they will continue to combine arrests with preventive education and rehabilitation programmes across states in Nigeria. The agency urged residents to report suspicious drug activity and pledged increased visibility throughout major urban centres in coming months.

The ex-UNILAG academic argued that empowering state governments with their own police formations would boost rapid response to localised threats and improve accountability in law enforcement. He stated that the federal government’s current centralised policing model has struggled to contain complex security issues in various regions, especially in the North-West and South-East geopolitical zones.
Calls for state police have intensified in recent years amid persistent security breaches and demands from state governors and civil society groups for decentralised policing. Proponents believe that locally controlled police will be better equipped to understand and address the unique concerns of their communities, while opponents worry about possible political misuse by state authorities.
“This move is long overdue and should be backed by a comprehensive legal framework to ensure checks and balances,” the ex-don said. He urged stakeholders at both federal and state levels, including lawmakers from the APC, PDP, LP, and NNPP, to support relevant constitutional amendments in order to make state police a reality. Opposition voices have previously cautioned against hasty implementation without adequate safeguards for human rights.
As at press time, President Tinubu has directed relevant ministries and agencies to begin consultations with key stakeholders. Legislative debate on the proposal is expected in the coming weeks, with public hearings likely to follow. Security experts say a successful transition to state policing could mark a major shift in Nigeria’s approach to internal security.
