The Nigeria Customs Service, Ports Terminal Multi-services Limited (PTML) Area Command, and the Ports Authority Police Western Command have intensified their partnership to improve maritime security in Lagos, following a high-level meeting held on Thursday. The courtesy visit, led by Customs Area Controller Nura Miko and his management team to the Police Western Command headquarters, aimed at reinforcing joint strategies for safeguarding Nigeria’s busiest commercial port corridor.
During the meeting, both agencies reaffirmed their commitment to promoting a secure and efficient trade environment at the port. Discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in key areas such as port security operations, intelligence sharing between officers, cargo protection protocols, anti-smuggling initiatives, and preventive measures against maritime-related crimes.
Maritime insecurity remains a major concern for stakeholders in Lagos and across Nigeria’s coastal region. The collaboration comes amid persistent threats including smuggling activities, unauthorised cargo movement, and the need to maintain public trust in the nation’s import-export processes. Improved coordination between customs and police is seen as vital to reducing illicit trade and supporting legitimate economic activity at the PTML terminal.
In a statement signed by Police Public Relations Officer Isaac Hundeyin after the event, both sides agreed to deepen operational links and share actionable intelligence on suspicious movements within the port area. “Our agencies are committed to ensuring that the port remains safe for business,” Hundeyin said. Customs Area Controller Nura Miko also noted that the ongoing cooperation would help close operational gaps exploited by criminal elements.
The agencies announced plans to expand joint patrols and conduct periodic reviews of security protocols at PTML. Stakeholders are expected to monitor the impact of this renewed collaboration on cargo throughput and overall trade efficiency in Lagos ports over the coming months.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has commenced a nationwide public awareness campaign in Lagos, urging Nigerians to always read food labels before making purchases. The campaign was launched on Friday, June 26, as part of ongoing efforts to protect consumers from hazardous products and ensure food safety across the country.
According to NAFDAC, the campaign will be rolled out in major cities and rural communities nationwide, targeting both manufacturers and consumers. The agency stated that the initiative is aimed at reducing the risk of consuming expired or counterfeit products by empowering Nigerians with information on how to identify safe and properly labelled foods.
NAFDAC said the decision to launch the campaign follows an increase in complaints about unregistered and improperly labelled food items circulating in Nigerian markets. The agency emphasised that reading product labels remains a critical step in safeguarding public health, especially as cases of food-borne illnesses rise.
The regulatory body called on manufacturers to comply fully with existing labelling guidelines, warning that failure to do so could attract sanctions. NAFDAC also encouraged members of the public to report any suspicious or poorly labelled products encountered during their shopping.
As the campaign continues, NAFDAC is expected to collaborate with market associations, consumer groups, and local authorities to spread its message. The agency reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all food products available in Nigerian markets meet required safety standards.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has imposed a ₦6 million fine on Saudi Airlines for alleged violations of aviation regulations at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. The sanction was announced on Friday, 26 June 2026, following an investigation by the agency into recent operational lapses reportedly linked to the airline.
According to the NCAA, the fine is part of efforts to ensure that all airlines operating within Nigeria adhere strictly to established safety and operational standards. The regulatory body stated that Saudi Airlines was found in breach of certain requirements, though specific details of the infractions were not disclosed at the time of this report.
This action comes at a time when Nigerian authorities are stepping up oversight of foreign carriers amid increasing concerns about passenger safety and service quality. The NCAA has previously warned that non-compliance by any airline—local or international—would attract strict penalties to protect Nigerian travellers and uphold the integrity of the country’s aviation sector.
Efforts to obtain comments from representatives of Saudi Airlines were unsuccessful as at press time. Rivers State Police Command has intercepted an alleged attempt to smuggle a firearm through Port Harcourt, arresting a male suspect after officers found a Browning pistol concealed inside a loaf of bread. The incident occurred along Azikiwe Road near Red Cross Junction during a routine stop-and-search operation on Friday, according to police authorities.
Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, stated that the recovery was made by operatives acting under the directive of Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju. Officers stopped a vehicle for security checks and conducted a thorough search of its occupants. During the search, the pistol was found ingeniously hidden inside bread belonging to one Braya Nanas, identified as a resident of New Road, Borikiri.
The discovery has raised fresh concerns over the creative methods employed by criminal elements to evade law enforcement in Rivers State and across the South-South zone. The command noted that the Browning pistol had no visible serial number, complicating efforts to trace its origin and raising questions about its intended use within the city.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the firearm had no serial number,” Kaborlo said in an official statement issued on Friday. The suspect reportedly admitted ownership of the weapon during interrogation and claimed he bought it in Okrika. Police said further investigation is ongoing to uncover potential accomplices and determine how widespread such tactics may be among criminal networks in the region.
The Rivers State Police Command urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly. Authorities assured that efforts would continue to clamp down on illegal arms trafficking and pledged increased patrols around key entry points into Port Harcourt. No further details about possible charges or court proceedings were provided as at press time.
