Move honours late former Chief of Staff; Presidency says decision aims to inspire patriotism among Nigerian youth
President Bola Tinubu on Friday announced the naming of a newly established national institution in Abuja after late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, a former Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters. The announcement was made as part of activities marking Democracy Day on 12 June, reflecting the administration’s commitment to recognising Nigeria’s democratic icons.
The institution, whose specific mandate and location within the Federal Capital Territory were not detailed at the event, is intended to serve as a centre for leadership and civic education for Nigerians. The Presidency stated that immortalising Yar’Adua was a deliberate effort to honour his significant contributions to Nigeria’s political development and to preserve his legacy for future generations.
General Yar’Adua served as Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters under the military regime led by Olusegun Obasanjo from 1976 to 1979. He later became a prominent advocate for democracy before his death in detention in 1997. According to the Presidency, the gesture is aimed at inspiring patriotism and sacrifice among Nigerian youth, while also strengthening national unity through remembrance of notable leaders.
No official statement from opposition parties or the Yar’Adua family was immediately available as at Friday evening. However, political observers note that such posthumous recognitions are common around Democracy Day celebrations, with successive administrations seeking to reaffirm their commitment to national reconciliation.
The new institution is expected to commence operations later this year, with details regarding its academic programmes and admission process yet to be released by relevant government agencies.

Association partners Seefeld Group for continent-wide study; findings to be presented at Aviation Africa event in Kenya
The African Business Aviation Association (AfBAA) has commenced the first phase of a comprehensive research project aimed at strengthening knowledge and perception of business aviation across Africa. The initiative, which began this June, is set to deliver its initial findings at the upcoming Aviation Africa event scheduled for Nairobi, Kenya, on 9–10 September 2026.
According to a statement by Jane Stanbury, media consultant to AfBAA, the research is being executed by Seefeld Group, an independent consultancy specialising in behavioural economics and strategic marketing research. The study is led by Charles Porteous, President of Seefeld Group. The objective is to provide the most data-driven and unified overview of business aviation on the continent so far.
AfBAA explained that this multi-phase research project will address the lack of consolidated data within Africa’s business aviation sector. The association believes that the outcome will support its members with accurate market insights and help attract new stakeholders. As at now, specific figures or participant numbers have not been disclosed.
In the official statement released by Stanbury on behalf of AfBAA, it was noted that the current executive team initiated the project as part of efforts to clarify the state of business aviation across contemporary Africa. The association said it expects that the results will guide policy direction and industry development for both existing and prospective members.
Further details on subsequent phases and broader policy implications are expected after the Nairobi presentation in September. AfBAA stated that it remains committed to fostering collaboration among stakeholders in order to boost growth within Africa’s business aviation industry.

Lagos Stakeholders Urge Multimodal Transport Overhaul as Nigeria Loses $4bn Annually
Global Transport Policy summit hears that logistics delays and poor integration cost country N800bn in avoidable waste each year
Global Transport Policy summit hears that logistics delays and poor integration cost country N800bn in avoidable waste each year
Stakeholders in Nigeria’s transport sector have called for urgent adoption of multimodal transport solutions in Lagos, following revelations that the country loses an estimated $4 billion (about ₦6.1 trillion at current exchange rates) every year due to inefficiencies such as traffic congestion, poor infrastructure integration and fragmented logistics systems. The call was made on Tuesday during the 2026 Global Transport Policy (GTP) Multimodal Roundtable held in Lagos.
Speaking at the event themed ‘Transforming Nigeria’s Transport System: Integrating Solutions for Safety, Efficiency and Sustainability,’ Chairman of the Global Transport Policy, Dr Oluwasegun Musa, disclosed that persistent delays in implementing key reforms have resulted in an additional N800 billion yearly loss through avoidable logistics waste. Musa stated that logistics costs now account for over 42 percent of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), a figure significantly higher than the global benchmark of less than 15 percent.
He explained that road transport currently handles more than 90 percent of all freight and passenger movement in Nigeria, while rail accounts for less than one percent—an imbalance he described as unsustainable for Africa’s largest economy. “Our present system is draining the economy and undermining national competitiveness,” Musa said at the roundtable.
The summit brought together policymakers, transport operators and industry experts to discuss strategies for integrating road, rail, air and maritime systems. Participants highlighted how overreliance on road networks has led to increased congestion, higher operating costs and frequent delays for businesses moving goods across states. Many argued that without a coordinated multimodal strategy, Nigeria risks further economic losses and missed opportunities in regional trade.
Musa urged government at all levels to prioritise implementation of transport reforms and invest heavily in infrastructure to support seamless connectivity between various modes. He warned that failure to address these challenges will continue to erode Nigeria’s economic gains. The roundtable concluded with a call for clear policy direction, public-private partnerships and stronger regulatory oversight to ensure efficient movement of people and goods nationwide.

ACA Foundation Awards ₦10m Scholarships to Lagos Students, Pushes Ethical Leadership in Schools
Over 4,000 public school students benefit as Lagos event highlights integrity and social responsibility education drive
Over 4,000 public school students benefit as Lagos event highlights integrity and social responsibility education drive
The African Capital Alliance (ACA) Foundation, in collaboration with Enactus Nigeria, has awarded ₦10 million in scholarships to outstanding participants at the grand finale of the 2026 Ethical Living Project (ELP), held in Lagos on Tuesday. The initiative, now in its third edition, engaged 4,145 public secondary school students from 40 schools across the six education districts of Lagos State.
At the closing ceremony, the organisers emphasised the need to address declining societal values by instilling principles such as integrity, accountability, discipline and social responsibility among young Nigerians. The six-week programme included ethics-focused workshops, mentorship sessions and an essay competition that encouraged students to reflect on their roles in building a fair and inclusive society.
Chairman of ACA Foundation, Paul Kokoricha, said the impact of the programme was evident not just in participation numbers but also in young people’s willingness to adopt ethical values. “The Ethical Living Project is not just about the figures; it shows that our youths are ready to take up integrity and critical thinking as part of their lives,” Kokoricha stated during his remarks at the event.
The initiative comes at a time when many stakeholders have raised concerns about eroding values among youths and the future leadership of Nigeria. By focusing on public secondary schools in Lagos—the country’s commercial capital—the project aims to build a foundation for responsible citizenship at scale.
Organisers said more editions are planned to reach additional states and deepen engagement with both students and teachers. Education sector observers say such interventions are crucial if Nigeria is to nurture leaders equipped to tackle present and future challenges.
