Residents of Gwallaga area in Bauchi metropolis, North-East Nigeria, have been gripped by fear following the killing of a 33-year-old man, Najamu Aminu, who was found dead in his room on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. The incident, which occurred overnight, has raised serious concerns about security within the community.
According to eyewitnesses in Gwallaga, Najamu Aminu was discovered lifeless in a pool of blood after being attacked while asleep. His body was recovered by operatives from the Township Police ‘A’ Division and handed over to his family for burial within three hours of the incident. The swift release of the corpse has since become a subject of public debate among residents and stakeholders.
The murder has heightened anxiety in Bauchi metropolis at a time when security remains a pressing issue across many parts of the North-East. Residents say the killing has left many afraid for their safety, while calls have mounted for authorities to step up protection measures and ensure justice is served.
Speaking on Friday about the case, Barrister Alkasim Muhammad, team lead at Organisation for African Child Development and Human Rights Protection, criticised what he described as silence from the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) days after the killing. Muhammad also questioned why no suspects had been invited or arrested as at June 10, and challenged the police’s decision to release the body for burial so quickly without what he termed proper investigation. “Why did the DPO so quickly release the deceased’s body for burial within three hours without proper investigation? Why was the case not transferred to the State CID for further investigation?” he asked.
As at press time, neither Bauchi State Police Command nor any government representative had issued an official statement regarding ongoing investigations or arrests connected to Najamu Aminu’s death. Human rights advocates insist that law enforcement must conduct a thorough probe and keep the public informed to restore confidence. Residents continue to call for improved security patrols and effective prosecution to deter future attacks in Bauchi metropolis.

A Lagos tenant, identified as Mr Bachelor, has revealed he lived for more than a year in a Surulere apartment without knowing his landlord’s late father was buried beneath the living room floor. The discovery was made on September 20, 2026, when members of the landlord’s family visited the property and informed the tenant of their intention to exhume the remains.
According to Mr Bachelor, who shared details of the incident on X (formerly Twitter), he was in his apartment when the landlord’s relatives arrived and disclosed that their late brother—who is also the landlord’s father—had been buried in the middle of his sitting room. “He was buried right in my living room, and I was not aware until they came around today,” he stated.
The family explained that they planned to move the body to another location they had prepared and assured Mr Bachelor that necessary repairs would be made to his sitting room after the exhumation. The tenant noted that he was the first occupant of the newly built house and had spent over a year there before learning about the burial.
The incident has raised fresh concerns among Lagos residents about transparency from landlords regarding property histories. Some social media users responding to Mr Bachelor’s post urged prospective tenants across Nigeria to conduct due diligence before moving into rental properties. Others called for clearer regulations around residential burials and disclosure by property owners.
As at press time, neither local authorities nor tenants’ rights groups have issued official statements on the matter. The landlord’s family has not provided additional comments beyond assurances of repairs. The situation highlights ongoing gaps in property regulation and tenant protection in Lagos State.
