Minister of Housing inspects Lagos site, promises expedited delivery as 12 estates under construction nationwide

President Bola Tinubu has launched the Renewed Hope Cities initiative to address Nigeria’s housing deficit, with new developments planned in each of the six geo-political zones. The announcement was made on Thursday during an inspection of the Lagos Renewed Hope City Project by Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Engr. Muttaqha Rabe Darma.

According to Darma, the federal government is also constructing housing estates in twelve locations across Nigeria, with two states selected from each zone. The minister stated that these projects form part of broader efforts under the Renewed Hope Agenda to provide affordable and decent accommodation for Nigerians who currently lack suitable housing options.

The renewed focus on housing comes as millions across urban and rural areas face rising rents and limited access to quality shelter. Government officials say the Renewed Hope Cities are designed to bridge the gap for low- and middle-income earners, while boosting local economies through construction jobs and increased investment in infrastructure.

“We are committed to ensuring that every Nigerian can access decent and affordable housing,” Darma said during his visit, adding that similar inspections would soon take place at sites in Karsana, Abuja, and Lambu along Gwarzo Road in Kano State. He noted that personal assessments would help identify obstacles facing contractors and ensure timely completion of all ongoing projects.

The minister explained that after assuming office, he received briefings from various departments and agencies overseeing the projects. He pledged to deploy his experience towards fast-tracking delivery timelines and overcoming implementation challenges. As work progresses on multiple sites nationwide, stakeholders await further details on allocation procedures and affordability criteria.

A Lagos tenant, identified as Mr Bachelor, has revealed he lived for more than a year in a Surulere apartment without knowing his landlord’s late father was buried beneath the living room floor. The discovery was made on September 20, 2026, when members of the landlord’s family visited the property and informed the tenant of their intention to exhume the remains.

According to Mr Bachelor, who shared details of the incident on X (formerly Twitter), he was in his apartment when the landlord’s relatives arrived and disclosed that their late brother—who is also the landlord’s father—had been buried in the middle of his sitting room. “He was buried right in my living room, and I was not aware until they came around today,” he stated.

The family explained that they planned to move the body to another location they had prepared and assured Mr Bachelor that necessary repairs would be made to his sitting room after the exhumation. The tenant noted that he was the first occupant of the newly built house and had spent over a year there before learning about the burial.

The incident has raised fresh concerns among Lagos residents about transparency from landlords regarding property histories. Some social media users responding to Mr Bachelor’s post urged prospective tenants across Nigeria to conduct due diligence before moving into rental properties. Others called for clearer regulations around residential burials and disclosure by property owners.
