Adewale says Mayorkun’s music journey changed after Davido contacted him via social media following a song cover
Veteran Nollywood actress Toyin Adewale has narrated how her son, popular singer Mayorkun, secured a breakthrough in the Nigerian music industry after being signed by superstar Davido in Lagos. Adewale disclosed this during an interview on the ‘Talk To B’ programme, reflecting on her son’s rise from recording covers to joining Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) in 2016.
According to Adewale, Mayorkun caught Davido’s attention after he posted a cover of Davido’s hit track, ‘The Money’, online. She explained that Davido reached out to Mayorkun through social media shortly after the cover went viral. This direct contact marked the beginning of Mayorkun’s journey with DMW, where he remained as an artiste from 2016 until 2021.
Adewale emphasised that the opportunity came unexpectedly but transformed her son’s career path. “Davido saw the cover and messaged him directly. It was a turning point for Mayorkun,” she said during the interview. She added that Mayorkun’s talent and consistency played a crucial role in attracting such interest from an established figure like Davido.
The actress highlighted the significance of social media and self-promotion for young Nigerian artistes seeking recognition in the industry. She noted that, while parental support is important, exposure and digital platforms now make it easier for talented individuals to be discovered by top musicians and labels.
Mayorkun’s signing to DMW led to several chart-topping singles and solidified his status as one of Nigeria’s leading music stars. The development underscores the growing influence of digital channels in shaping music careers across Lagos and beyond.

Retired Major General Abubakar Rabe, former spokesman of the Nigerian Army, has died while being held by armed bandits in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. The incident occurred after Rabe and his wife, Amina, were abducted on 30 May along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli Road, with their driver sustaining gunshot injuries during the ambush near Zakin Baure village.
Following the abduction, security agencies and the Katsina State Government launched operations to secure the couple’s release. According to officials, several coordinated attempts were made to locate their whereabouts and negotiate their safe return, but these efforts did not yield results before tragedy struck.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about rising insecurity across northern Nigeria and the persistent threat posed by armed groups targeting both civilians and high-profile figures. Many Nigerians have expressed alarm over the inability of authorities to curb kidnappings and guarantee safety on major highways.
Confirming the development, the Katsina State Government stated that Rabe died in captivity due to complications linked to diabetes and hypertension. In an official statement, government representatives extended condolences to his family and commended security agencies for their efforts. The statement also reaffirmed government’s commitment to intensify operations against armed banditry in Katsina and neighbouring states.
While search and rescue operations continue for other victims of similar attacks in the region, authorities urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security operatives. Sources within the community confirmed that the assailants were fully armed during the operation. The victim’s wife, who was injured in the attack, is currently receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital. The incident has thrown residents of Ode Oriya into fear and anxiety over rising insecurity in the area.

Ogun Police Arrest Driver, Guarantor Over Attempted Smuggling of Stolen Company Bus to Benin Republic
Command intercepts 28-seater bus at Idiroko border; suspects allegedly conspired to sell vehicle declared stolen from Lagos
Command intercepts 28-seater bus at Idiroko border; suspects allegedly conspired to sell vehicle declared stolen from Lagos
Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a commercial driver, Seun Lawal, aged 46, and his guarantor, Ademola Oriyomi, aged 38, for allegedly attempting to smuggle a stolen company bus into Benin Republic. The arrest was made by officers attached to the Idiroko Division on Wednesday night following actionable intelligence received by the Command around 11:00 p.m. on June 12.
According to the spokesperson of Ogun State Police Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, Lawal, who was entrusted with a 28-seater Toyota Coaster bus belonging to his company in Lagos, conspired with Oriyomi to illegally transport the vehicle across the border for unlawful disposal. The vehicle had earlier been declared stolen by its owners after it disappeared from their premises in Lagos.
Police sources revealed that surveillance teams at the Idiroko border intercepted the suspects as they attempted to cross into Benin Republic under suspicious circumstances. Both men were immediately apprehended and taken into custody for interrogation. The incident underscores ongoing concerns about cross-border vehicle theft and trafficking in South-West Nigeria, particularly along major routes linking Ogun State with neighbouring countries.
In an official statement issued on Thursday in Abeokuta, DSP Babaseyi confirmed the arrest and warned that the Command will continue to intensify efforts against vehicle theft syndicates operating within and around Ogun State. “Our operatives acted swiftly on credible intelligence and succeeded in preventing another stolen Nigerian vehicle from being trafficked abroad,” Babaseyi stated.
The suspects are currently assisting police investigations and will be charged to court upon conclusion of inquiries. The police have urged company owners and transport operators across Lagos and Ogun States to strengthen internal controls and promptly report all cases of missing vehicles. Security agencies in Ogun State have also reaffirmed their commitment to collaboration with neighbouring states and countries to tackle transborder crimes.
