Commissioner Tijani Fatai confirms arrest of 28-year-old suspect; victims lured with fake job offers from other states

The Lagos State Police Command has dismantled a prostitution syndicate in the Idumota area of Lagos Island, rescuing 12 teenage girls who were allegedly trafficked and forced into commercial sex work. The operation, which took place after a tip-off on June 11, was led by Commissioner of Police Tijani Fatai.

According to police authorities, a 16-year-old victim managed to escape from one of the apartments where the girls were being held and reported her ordeal at the Bode Thomas police station in Surulere. She was brought to the station by a Good Samaritan, prompting officers to launch an immediate investigation. Following this lead, police raided the identified apartments and rescued girls aged between 13 and 15 years.

The main suspect, Princess Andrew, aged 28, was arrested during the operation. Police allege she recruited young girls from several states outside Lagos under false promises of legitimate employment. Instead, upon their arrival in Lagos, the victims were compelled to engage in prostitution within rented apartments operated by the syndicate.

Commissioner Fatai stated that the rescue was possible due to swift action and coordination among police divisions. “We busted the prostitution syndicate following a report of a girl who was brought to our station in Bode Thomas,” he said. He added that investigations are ongoing to apprehend other members of the trafficking network and to ensure that all those involved face prosecution.

The Lagos State government has been grappling with rising cases of child trafficking and sexual exploitation in recent years, especially within densely populated urban centres. Security agencies have called on parents and guardians to remain vigilant and educate their wards about the dangers of accepting job offers from unknown sources.

The rescued girls are currently receiving medical care and counselling under state protection. Police authorities have assured that efforts are ongoing to reunite them with their families and provide necessary support for their rehabilitation.

Former Vice President hails judicial intervention as reprieve for African Democratic Congress, urges INEC to respect court process

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has welcomed the recent order of the Appeal Court in Abuja, which has halted the execution of a lower court judgement that would have led to the deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a political party. The order was issued on Tuesday, 16 June, granting a stay of execution pending determination of the appeal.

The development came after the ADC filed an appeal challenging the earlier ruling by a Federal High Court which had supported the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) move to deregister several parties, including ADC. The Appeal Court’s decision means that ADC will retain its status as a registered political party until the matter is resolved.

The issue of party deregistration has remained contentious in Nigeria, with many stakeholders arguing that it threatens political pluralism and limits options for voters. The INEC had previously moved against parties it said failed to meet requirements under the Electoral Act, sparking legal challenges from affected groups.

Welcoming the court’s intervention, Atiku described it as “a victory for democracy and rule of law.” He called on INEC to respect the court’s decision and allow ADC and other affected parties full participation in ongoing political processes. As at press time, INEC officials had not issued a formal response.

With this order in place, attention now shifts to further legal proceedings at the Appeal Court. Political observers say the outcome could set an important precedent on party rights and electoral regulations ahead of future elections.

French forward leads team to victory, sending Senegal out of the tournament in high-stakes knockout fixture

France defeated Senegal in a decisive FIFA World Cup 2026 encounter on Tuesday, with star forward Kylian Mbappe scoring two goals to secure his team’s place in the next round. The match, held at a packed stadium, saw the French side dominate play and ultimately send Senegal out of the competition.

From the opening whistle, France pressed hard against Senegal’s defence, creating several opportunities. Mbappe opened the scoring early in the first half, capitalising on a defensive error to put France ahead. His second goal came after the break, sealing a comfortable win for Les Bleus and ending hopes for Senegal’s continued participation in the tournament.

Senegal had entered the match with high expectations, aiming to become the first African side to reach this stage in recent years. However, France’s superior attacking play and solid defensive structure proved too much for the West African team. The result highlights ongoing challenges faced by African teams on football’s biggest stage despite improvements in squad quality and tactical awareness.

French manager Didier Deschamps praised Mbappe’s performance after the match, saying his clinical finishing made all the difference on the night. Meanwhile, Senegalese coach Aliou Cissé acknowledged his team’s efforts but admitted they struggled to contain France’s attack. No official statement has been released yet by either federation regarding future plans following the result.

With this victory, France advance further into the knockout rounds of the World Cup and strengthen their credentials as tournament favourites. The focus now shifts to their next opponents as anticipation builds among fans and analysts alike.

Trump Criticises Israel’s Lebanon Campaign, Calls for Restraint in Ongoing Conflict

Former US President urges Israeli government to reconsider military approach as regional tensions escalate

Former United States President Donald Trump has criticised Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Lebanon, urging the Israeli government to exercise restraint as the conflict continues to escalate. Trump made the remarks on Tuesday, highlighting concerns over the humanitarian and political fallout from Israel’s operations across its northern border.

The criticism comes amid renewed hostilities between Israel and armed groups based in Lebanon, with reports of cross-border strikes and rising casualties. Trump’s comments mark a departure from his previous stance of unwavering support for Israel during his time in office, signalling a shift as violence threatens to destabilise the wider Middle East region.

Observers say Trump’s intervention could influence international response to the conflict, especially given his continued influence within Republican Party circles ahead of upcoming US elections. The situation in Lebanon has drawn global attention, with several governments and humanitarian agencies warning that further escalation may lead to a wider crisis affecting millions in the region.

While Israeli authorities have defended their actions as necessary for national security, critics argue that sustained military operations risk undermining prospects for long-term stability. As at Tuesday, there has been no formal response from the Israeli government to Trump’s remarks. Regional analysts predict that pressure from both Western leaders and Arab states may intensify calls for de-escalation in the coming days.

The international community is closely monitoring developments, with diplomatic channels expected to be activated to prevent further deterioration. Stakeholders warn that without meaningful dialogue, the situation could have lasting implications for peace and security across the Middle East.
