Incident at Diobu sparks renewed calls against jungle justice as police confirm woman acted with mother’s consent
A woman identified as Maria Kobara narrowly escaped being lynched by an angry mob on Saturday in the Mile 2, Diobu area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, after residents falsely accused her of attempting to abduct a 12-year-old girl. Officers from Azikiwe Police Division intervened at Owo Street to rescue Kobara before the situation could escalate further.
Eyewitnesses reported that trouble started when a resident challenged Kobara about her relationship with the child. Despite explaining several times that she was acting with the mother’s permission to take the girl to a church branch on Eagle Island, suspicion quickly spread among bystanders. The crowd soon accused Kobara of child trafficking and began to assault her before police operatives arrived.
Following the incident, police investigations confirmed that the allegation against Kobara was baseless. The girl’s mother told authorities she had authorised Kobara to accompany her daughter for a church programme. The case has reignited concerns over the prevalence of jungle justice in Rivers State and the dangers posed by false accusations.
Rivers State Police Command spokesperson could not be immediately reached for comment. However, rights advocates have repeatedly condemned mob actions, warning that innocent Nigerians continue to suffer from hasty judgments and lack of due process. “People refused to listen to explanations and immediately concluded she was a child thief,” said Nelson Ogiriya, an eyewitness present at the scene.
The police have urged members of the public to remain calm and allow law enforcement agencies investigate any suspected crime before taking action. Stakeholders in Rivers State are calling for more public enlightenment campaigns to discourage jungle justice and ensure better cooperation with security agencies going forward.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has welcomed the recent order of the Appeal Court in Abuja, which has halted the execution of a lower court judgement that would have led to the deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a political party. The order was issued on Tuesday, 16 June, granting a stay of execution pending determination of the appeal.
The development came after the ADC filed an appeal challenging the earlier ruling by a Federal High Court which had supported the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) move to deregister several parties, including ADC. The Appeal Court’s decision means that ADC will retain its status as a registered political party until the matter is resolved.
The issue of party deregistration has remained contentious in Nigeria, with many stakeholders arguing that it threatens political pluralism and limits options for voters. The INEC had previously moved against parties it said failed to meet requirements under the Electoral Act, sparking legal challenges from affected groups.
Welcoming the court’s intervention, Atiku described it as “a victory for democracy and rule of law.” He called on INEC to respect the court’s decision and allow ADC and other affected parties full participation in ongoing political processes. As at press time, INEC officials had not issued a formal response.
With this order in place, attention now shifts to further legal proceedings at the Appeal Court. Political observers say the outcome could set an important precedent on party rights and electoral regulations ahead of future elections.
