FG Approves New York, Dubai, Canada Routes for United Nigeria Airlines, Says Keyamo

Aviation minister announces new international licences for Nigerian carrier, highlighting drive to expand sector and boost forex earnings
The federal government has granted United Nigeria Airlines approval to operate flights on three new international routes—New York, Dubai, and Canada. This announcement was made by Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during a briefing in Abuja on Friday, 19 June 2026.
According to Keyamo, the move is part of government’s effort to promote indigenous airlines and enhance Nigeria’s connectivity with key global destinations. He stated that the approval followed a thorough review of United Nigeria Airlines’ application and compliance with regulatory requirements set by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). “We are committed to supporting local airlines as they seek expansion beyond Africa,” Keyamo said.
The development is expected to open up new business opportunities and improve access for Nigerians seeking to travel for education, commerce or tourism. The aviation sector has faced challenges in recent years due to limited foreign exchange access and rising operational costs. Industry observers say the approval of these high-demand international routes could help United Nigeria Airlines boost its revenue profile while reducing reliance on foreign carriers.
Keyamo added that government would continue to ensure a level playing field for all operators in line with global best practices. He urged the airline to maintain safety standards and quality service as it prepares to launch operations on the newly approved routes. As at press time, United Nigeria Airlines had not announced specific commencement dates for flights to New York, Dubai or Canada.
The minister emphasised that government will monitor implementation closely and provide necessary support through relevant agencies. Stakeholders in the aviation industry have welcomed the decision as a step towards strengthening Nigeria’s presence in international air travel.

Ekiti INEC Confirms Over One Million Registered Voters Ahead of 2026 Governorship Election
Electoral commission says voter roll remains steady as political parties prepare for high-stakes South-West contest
Electoral commission says voter roll remains steady as political parties prepare for high-stakes South-West contest
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that Ekiti State now boasts over one million registered voters as preparations intensify for the 2026 governorship election. The announcement was made on Friday, 19 June, as political parties and stakeholders in the South-West state began strategising for the upcoming poll.
According to INEC officials, the latest figures show only a marginal increase in the number of eligible voters compared to previous elections. Despite the rising voter population, analysts say the outcome of the next governorship race may not differ significantly from past results, citing entrenched party structures and voting patterns across Ekiti’s local government areas.
The significance of the voter register has been heightened by recent calls from civil society groups urging INEC to ensure that all eligible citizens are able to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) before the poll. Some political observers argue that increasing voter turnout, rather than just registration figures, will be critical if any party hopes to upset the dominance of established players like the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti.
An INEC spokesperson stated, “We have maintained a transparent process in updating the register and urge residents to participate actively during Continuous Voter Registration exercises.” Meanwhile, opposition parties have called for closer monitoring of electoral processes to guard against malpractice. “The integrity of this election depends on full transparency at every stage,” an official from one leading opposition party added.
With Ekiti’s political landscape largely unchanged since the last cycle, experts believe that alliances among local leaders and grassroots mobilisation will play major roles in determining who emerges as Governor. The coming months are expected to see intensified campaigns and coalition-building as contenders vie for support ahead of what many describe as a crucial test for democracy in the state.

Infinix Launches HOT 70 Series Nationwide, Highlights Personal Expression Through Colour in Lagos Event
New smartphone range offers Nigerians customisable designs with unique colour options, reflecting shifting trends in technology and lifestyle
New smartphone range offers Nigerians customisable designs with unique colour options, reflecting shifting trends in technology and lifestyle
Infinix Mobility has introduced the HOT 70 smartphone series across Nigeria, unveiling the device at a launch event in Lagos on Wednesday, 19 June 2026. The new lineup is available in six distinct colours—Thermo Orange, Quiet Violet, Green Texture, Night Pulse, Silver Dancer, and Dive Blue—marking a move towards personal expression through design for Nigerian consumers.
The event showcased how the HOT 70 departs from traditional smartphone marketing focused on technical specifications alone. Instead, emphasis was placed on the phone’s appearance, feel, and how it fits into daily life. Infinix representatives said the aim was to make smartphones an extension of individual identity, blending technology with fashion. The Thermo Orange variant features temperature-sensitive finishes that change tone based on environmental conditions, while Quiet Violet and Green Texture offer subtle shifts in light reflection and tactile surface details.
According to product experts at the launch, “People now want their phones to reflect who they are—not just what they do with it.” This approach responds to a growing trend among Nigerian youths and young professionals who see their devices as integral to personal branding. The HOT 70 also allows for further customisation with initials or symbols engraved on the casing.
Industry analysts note that smartphones increasingly appear in public spaces—from classrooms to social media feeds—making visual identity more important than ever. Experts believe this strategy could appeal to a market seeking individuality without sacrificing affordability or performance. No official price was announced at the event; however, Infinix stated that all colour variants would be distributed nationwide through accredited retailers.
As competition intensifies in Nigeria’s mobile phone sector, Infinix’s new range signals a shift towards lifestyle-oriented technology products. The company said it plans further engagement campaigns across major cities in coming weeks to demonstrate the HOT 70’s features and gather user feedback.

COCEFAAA Urges $6,000 Cocoa Price Floor at Abidjan Summit, Demands End to Africa’s 6% Value Trap
Alliance calls for continental cocoa bloc as smallholder farmers face unstable prices and limited share of global chocolate revenue
Alliance calls for continental cocoa bloc as smallholder farmers face unstable prices and limited share of global chocolate revenue
The Cocoa and Coffee Farmers Alliance Association of Africa (COCEFAAA) has demanded a $6,000 per tonne price floor for cocoa exports, calling for a pan-African approach to protect smallholder farmers from global market shocks. This call was made after the 7th Steering Committee Meeting of the Côte d’Ivoire-Ghana Cocoa Initiative held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire on Wednesday.
COCEFAAA Global President, Comrade Adeola Adegoke, commended Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama and Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara for championing producer-country interests. Adegoke however stressed that bilateral cooperation between Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire must evolve into a continent-wide structure if African cocoa farmers are to benefit meaningfully from the value chain. He argued that limiting collaboration to two countries leaves millions of smallholders across Africa exposed to volatile international prices.
The alliance highlighted that Africa, which produces over 70 percent of the world’s cocoa beans, receives only about six percent of the $100 billion global chocolate industry’s value. According to COCEFAAA, this persistent imbalance keeps African economies in a ‘value trap,’ exporting raw materials instead of processed goods. The group insisted that setting a $6,000 price floor would secure fairer returns for producers and stabilise incomes in major cocoa-producing countries like Nigeria, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.
Adegoke stated: “We urge African leaders to adopt a unified stance on cocoa pricing to end decades of exploitation by international buyers. Only through continental solidarity can we change the narrative for our farmers.” He further called on governments to invest in local processing industries so more value is retained within Africa. However, industry stakeholders warn that raising prices without coordinated action could trigger market backlash or push buyers towards alternative sources.
COCEFAAA concluded by urging policymakers across West and Central Africa to form a continental cocoa bloc aimed at negotiating better terms with multinational companies. The group emphasised that such collective action would not only improve livelihoods but also contribute significantly to economic diversification efforts on the continent.
