Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, on Tuesday commissioned a series of projects including 100 housing units for internally displaced persons (IDPs) and a mini solar grid in Illela Local Government Area of Sokoto State. The event, held on 18 June 2026, saw collaboration between the Sokoto State government under Governor Ahmed Aliyu and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
According to a statement signed by Abubakar Bawa, Director General, Media and Publicity Government House Sokoto, the projects are part of ongoing efforts to provide shelter and basic amenities for families affected by insecurity in the North-West region. The newly commissioned facilities include housing units designed to accommodate IDPs, a mini solar power grid for sustainable electricity supply, as well as other community development initiatives.
The commissioning comes at a critical time as many residents in border communities like Illela continue to face displacement due to security challenges. Stakeholders say interventions such as these are crucial to restoring normalcy and improving living conditions for affected populations. The partnership with UNDP is expected to enhance resilience among vulnerable groups while supporting local recovery programmes.
Governor Zulum commended the Sokoto State administration and its partners for prioritising humanitarian support. “Providing secure housing and basic infrastructure is key to stability in our communities,” he said at the ceremony. Governor Aliyu also highlighted the importance of collaborative approaches with development agencies to address urgent needs across Sokoto State.
With the completion of these projects, officials say hundreds of displaced persons in Illela LGA will benefit from improved shelter and access to reliable electricity. The state government has pledged continued investment in infrastructure and social welfare initiatives targeting areas most impacted by displacement.
