No fewer than 2,180 persons drawn from disability communities in Sokoto, Kebbi, Kogi, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will benefit from a climate-smart agriculture training programme beginning this June. The initiative is being championed by The Leprosy Mission Nigeria in partnership with The Leprosy Mission Sweden and support from the Swedish Mission Council (SMC).
Speaking at a one-day Project Advisory Committee meeting held in Sokoto on Thursday, State Programme Officer of The Leprosy Mission Nigeria, Mr. Ameh Jerry, said the project is designed to boost sustainable livelihoods for people with disabilities while enhancing their resilience to climate change impacts. He explained that the training would focus on practical adaptation strategies, promotion of gender equality and upholding human rights within participating communities.
According to Jerry, “The project will not only address environmental challenges but also promote social inclusion by equipping participants with knowledge on best agricultural practices that can withstand erratic weather patterns.” He added that the selection of beneficiaries was carried out in collaboration with local leaders and relevant stakeholders in each state.
The programme comes as Nigeria faces mounting threats from climate change, especially among vulnerable groups dependent on agriculture for survival. Many rural areas in the North-West and North-Central have experienced declining crop yields due to droughts and flooding linked to global warming. Organisers say empowering persons with disabilities with climate-resilient skills will help reduce poverty and improve food security in these regions.
Stakeholders present at the Sokoto meeting commended the initiative as timely, noting that inclusive development remains crucial for national progress. Representatives of participating communities expressed hope that the training would open new opportunities for economic empowerment. The Leprosy Mission Nigeria said follow-up monitoring visits are scheduled to ensure participants can fully apply their new skills after completion of the exercise.
