Faith-based conferences, volunteer work and social gatherings emerge as new avenues for Christian women seeking partners

Christian women in Lagos and other major cities are increasingly turning to alternative avenues outside traditional church gatherings to meet God-fearing men, with faith-based conferences, volunteer programmes and social events gaining traction as preferred options. The trend, highlighted by recent activities on Sunday, reflects a shift in how young Christians approach relationships amid busy routines and changing social patterns.

Organisers of Christian singles’ retreats and ministry-backed networking nights across Lagos Mainland told reporters that attendance at these events has surged since early June, with many participants citing the desire for genuine connections rooted in shared values. Besides church services, believers now commonly meet potential partners at faith-based concerts, charity outreaches, study groups in cafés and even through mutual friends at weddings and receptions.

The move comes as many young Nigerians balance work demands with spiritual commitments. “Many couples did not actually meet during Sunday service,” said Blessing Adeyemi, a coordinator of a Christian singles mixer held in Ikeja. “We see people form lasting relationships through community service or at Christian music festivals because these settings allow them to show their real selves.” Adeyemi added that intentional small gatherings and prayer meetups hosted by individuals have also grown in popularity within the past year.

Experts say this development is partly driven by the rise of digital platforms and changing perceptions around traditional matchmaking. While online dating remains an option — with several faith-based apps reporting increased registrations — many Christians still prioritise environments where they can interact face-to-face. Relationship adviser Segun Adebayo noted that trusted introductions from friends or colleagues remain effective: “Word-of-mouth referrals help ensure people meet others with similar backgrounds and expectations,” he explained.

With more churches collaborating with non-profits for outreach projects and hosting public events like gospel concerts or book clubs, stakeholders expect the range of meeting points for single Christians to expand further. Organisers plan to continue leveraging both offline and online channels in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt to foster meaningful relationships grounded in faith.

Strong group stage performances put African teams in contention for unprecedented FIFA World Cup round of 16 presence

Morocco and Ghana have emerged as frontrunners among African representatives at the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026, with both sides topping their groups after decisive victories in their latest matches. The tournament, which is taking place across North American cities, has seen African teams deliver standout performances as at Tuesday, 23 June.

Both Morocco and Ghana secured crucial wins in their second group matches, placing them ahead of their rivals and raising hopes of a historic number of African teams progressing to the knockout rounds. Their performances have fuelled optimism among fans and stakeholders that Africa could surpass its previous best by having more than two teams reach the round of 16 in a single tournament.

This development is significant for the continent’s football ambitions, as African teams have traditionally struggled to advance past the group stages at World Cup finals. The current campaign reflects improved preparation and tactical discipline among African sides, with players featuring prominently in European leagues bringing added experience.

Officials from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have commended the teams’ efforts, noting that their progress could inspire further investment in grassroots football across the continent. While official reactions from Nigeria’s football authorities were not immediately available, fans across West and North Africa have taken to social media to celebrate the achievements of Morocco and Ghana.

With one group match remaining for each team, analysts say qualification for the knockout stage is now within reach if current form continues. The prospect of multiple African nations making it to the round of 16 would mark a new chapter for African football on the global stage.

CISLAC, Transparency International Condemn UK Court’s Acquittal of Diezani in London Graft Case

Anti-corruption groups warn verdict could weaken Nigeria’s fight against high-profile financial crimes; call for stronger international collaboration

Anti-corruption groups warn verdict could weaken Nigeria’s fight against high-profile financial crimes; call for stronger international collaboration

Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) and Transparency International have openly criticised the recent verdict of a United Kingdom court that acquitted former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke of corruption charges. The judgment, delivered in London on Tuesday, has sparked reactions from anti-graft campaigners in Nigeria who believe the outcome may undermine the country’s efforts to tackle high-profile economic crimes.

The UK court decision followed months of legal proceedings in which Alison-Madueke was accused of accepting bribes and misusing her official position during her tenure as minister. With the acquittal, CISLAC and Transparency International have expressed concern that the verdict sets a negative precedent and could embolden individuals involved in corrupt practices within Nigeria and abroad.

Both organisations argued that Diezani’s case is of significant interest to Nigerians given its implications for accountability in the oil and gas sector. They noted that many Nigerians view robust prosecution of former public officials as crucial for restoring confidence in government institutions. According to CISLAC, the ruling highlights persistent gaps in international cooperation on asset recovery and prosecution of cross-border corruption cases.

In separate statements issued after the judgement, CISLAC and Transparency International called on Nigerian authorities to intensify local investigations into allegations involving former ministers and other senior officials. The groups also urged both Nigerian and UK governments to strengthen frameworks for mutual legal assistance and ensure that justice is served regardless of jurisdiction.

As Nigerians continue to demand greater transparency in public office, civil society groups say they will monitor ongoing efforts by anti-graft agencies to pursue outstanding cases linked to major oil sector scandals. Stakeholders warn that without strong collaboration between Nigeria and international partners, prosecuting complex financial crimes may remain an uphill task.
