Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Centre has intensified its youth empowerment drive in Agege, Lagos, holding a skills acquisition programme on Tuesday aimed at reducing youth unemployment by equipping students and graduates with practical expertise. The event brought together tertiary-level participants who received training in key areas needed for today’s competitive labour market.
The skills development initiative, which started in 2024, is designed to address the country’s rising unemployment rate by discouraging over-reliance on white collar jobs and promoting entrepreneurship among Nigerian youths. According to Abdulrahman Thabit, Coordinator of Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Centre in Lagos, the programme has already impacted hundreds of beneficiaries who are now building careers with the skills acquired.
“Our target is to raise Abdur Rahman Ibn Awf of this generation. Islamic history will not be complete without mentioning him because he showed us that it is not over until it is over,” Thabit said while addressing participants. He noted that the centre’s approach focuses on both leadership and vocational training as a way to provide lasting solutions to unemployment challenges faced by young people.
The centre emphasised the importance of introducing practical skill acquisition at an early stage, arguing that such exposure will prepare youths for self-reliance and reduce dependence on the shrinking formal job sector. Stakeholders at the event encouraged participants to seize opportunities created by the changing economy and assured them of continued support from Al-Habibiyyah.
As Nigeria continues to record high youth unemployment rates, initiatives like this are seen as critical interventions. The centre plans to expand its programmes across other states, with further training sessions scheduled for later in the year.

The Julicare Foundation, a Canada-based charity led by Prince Julius Ojo, has called for increased support for children living with special needs in Lagos and across Nigeria. The appeal came during a Father’s Day outreach at Modupe Cole Memorial Child Care and Treatment Home/School in Lagos, where the foundation donated food items and essential supplies on Sunday.
During the event, Julicare Foundation also announced it would take responsibility for the salary of a nurse providing medical care to children at the institution. According to Prince Ojo, the gesture is part of ongoing efforts to address critical needs within special-needs communities who continue to face challenges due to limited funding and public awareness.
Speaking at the outreach, Ojo stressed the importance of collective action by individuals, corporate organisations and international agencies to improve the welfare of vulnerable children. “Many special-needs institutions lack basic resources required for proper care. It is time for all stakeholders to come together to bridge this gap,” he said.
Staff at Modupe Cole Memorial Child Care and Treatment Home/School received foodstuffs and other supplies from the foundation during the visit. The foundation’s commitment to pay the salary of a medical nurse was welcomed by administrators, who described it as timely support given rising operational costs.
Julicare Foundation has been active in supporting children with disabilities in Nigeria through donations and advocacy campaigns. The organisation says it will continue engaging relevant authorities and partners to mobilise additional resources for special-needs education and healthcare. Ojo urged government at all levels to prioritise policies that address the unique challenges faced by these children, while calling on well-meaning Nigerians to support ongoing initiatives.

Founder of Smile & Shine Children’s Foundation, Dr Nimi Stephanie Ekere, has called for greater investment in adolescent development to secure Nigeria’s future growth. Speaking at the STRIVE Conference 2026 in Lagos on Wednesday, Ekere emphasised that Nigeria’s youth face significant hurdles including school dropout, teenage pregnancy, substance abuse, violence, poor mental health and limited access to mentorship.
The STRIVE Conference, themed ‘Safe. Skilled. Successful.’, brought together students, teachers, healthcare professionals and youth advocates to discuss practical solutions for empowering adolescents. The event focused on equipping young people with skills and knowledge needed to overcome everyday challenges and realise their full potential.
Ekere described adolescence as a critical period bridging childhood and adulthood, stressing that targeted interventions are essential given Nigeria’s large youth population. ‘Adolescents hold enormous potential but many lack access to the necessary support systems to thrive,’ she said during her address at the conference.
She highlighted that without deliberate and sustained investment from government, private sector and civil society, issues such as early school leaving and rising cases of mental health problems among youths will continue to affect national development. According to Ekere, addressing these concerns requires not only financial resources but also mentorship programmes and life-skills education tailored specifically for Nigerian realities.
Participants at the event agreed on the need for multi-sectoral collaboration involving parents, educators, healthcare providers and policymakers. The foundation urged stakeholders to prioritise adolescent-friendly policies and allocate adequate resources towards health, education and protection services for young people. The launch event, attended by Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, gathered healthcare professionals and development partners at what has been described as one of the country’s most ambitious health infrastructure undertakings.
During the ceremony, Governor Eno highlighted the significance of the project, calling it one of the most audacious investments by his administration.
