Alimosho Local Council in Lagos State has arrested 10 individuals for alleged illegal waste dumping across several communities during an overnight enforcement operation on June 11, 2026. The crackdown was carried out as part of the council’s new environmental initiative, Project Iron Shield, aimed at curbing indiscriminate refuse disposal and restoring environmental sanity in the area.

According to a statement by Taiwo Onayinka, Head of Legal Services and Chairman of the Project Iron Shield Task Force, the suspects were apprehended while purportedly dumping waste at unauthorised locations along Egbeda Road corridor, Shasha axis and Dopemu under bridge. These areas have been identified by authorities as major hotspots for illegal refuse dumping within Alimosho.

The council said the operation marks a significant step in its ongoing efforts to eliminate illegal dumpsites and enforce compliance with Lagos State’s environmental and public health regulations. “A clean environment is not built by speeches but by collective responsibility,” Onayinka stated in the official release. He emphasised that those arrested would face prosecution in line with extant laws governing sanitation offences in the state.

Project Iron Shield is described by the council as a sustained enforcement programme designed to ensure cleaner communities and discourage activities contributing to environmental pollution. The initiative comes amid widespread concerns over public health risks posed by uncontrolled refuse disposal across Lagos metropolis.

The council has urged residents to support ongoing sanitation efforts by adhering strictly to designated waste collection procedures and reporting cases of illegal dumping to relevant authorities. Further enforcement exercises are expected in coming weeks as Alimosho intensifies its drive for a healthier environment.

A political storm is brewing in Zamfara State as the Zamfara State Concerned Citizens (ZSCC) announced plans on Monday to take legal action against the Minister of State for Defence and former Governor, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, over alleged irregularities in his educational qualifications. The group made its position known through a statement issued by its leader, Musa Abdullahi, in Kaduna.

According to Abdullahi, ZSCC is challenging Matawalle’s use of a certificate reportedly obtained from the Vocational Training Centre, Bunza, for his previous governorship bid and current ministerial appointment. The group alleges that the said certificate does not meet constitutional requirements for public office holders at state or federal level. “We have concluded consultations and are preparing to approach the court to test the validity of these credentials,” Abdullahi stated.

This development comes amid growing scrutiny of public officials’ academic backgrounds in Nigeria, with similar cases having resulted in court actions and political setbacks for some politicians. ZSCC said their move is motivated by a desire to uphold transparency and accountability in governance within Zamfara and beyond. “Public office is a position of trust that demands honesty, transparency and strict compliance with the law,” Abdullahi added.

At the time of filing this report, Matawalle had not publicly responded to the allegations.
