APC Secures Victory in Kano House of Representatives Bye-Election
Ruling party retains seat in North-West state as opposition yet to issue official response on poll outcome
Ruling party retains seat in North-West state as opposition yet to issue official response on poll outcome
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has won the recently concluded House of Representatives bye-election in Kano State, consolidating its influence in the North-West region. The election, which took place on Sunday, 21 June 2026, saw APC candidates claim victory amid keen interest from both ruling and opposition parties.
The bye-election was conducted to fill a vacant seat in the Kano federal constituency. Polling units across the affected area opened early, with voters turning out under the supervision of electoral officials and security agencies. Counting was completed by evening, and results announced by the relevant authorities confirmed APC as the winning party.
This victory is significant for APC as it comes at a time when political competition remains intense in Kano, a state known for its strategic importance in national politics. The outcome is expected to further strengthen APC’s presence in the federal legislature and may influence alignments ahead of future general elections.
As at the time of this report, opposition parties had not released any official statements regarding the conduct or outcome of the bye-election. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is expected to present certificates of return to the winning candidate after completing all formalities.
Political analysts believe this result could impact party strategies going forward, especially with Kano often seen as a bellwether for voter sentiment in Northern Nigeria. Stakeholders will be watching closely for any post-election petitions or reactions from aggrieved parties.

Yiaga Africa Confirms INEC Ekiti Poll Results, Flags Widespread Vote Buying
Observer group validates official outcome but urges authorities to tackle electoral malpractice as vote trading persists in South-West state
Observer group validates official outcome but urges authorities to tackle electoral malpractice as vote trading persists in South-West state
Yiaga Africa has confirmed the official results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the recent governorship election in Ekiti State, South-West Nigeria, but raised alarm over widespread incidents of vote buying during the exercise. The group made this known on Sunday, following its independent observation of the poll.
According to Yiaga Africa, its Parallel Vote Tabulation (PVT) data matched the final figures released by INEC, indicating that the official results reflect votes cast at polling units across Ekiti. However, the organisation expressed serious concern about patterns of financial inducement observed at various locations during voting.
The confirmation from Yiaga Africa comes amid growing scrutiny of Nigeria’s electoral process and repeated calls for reforms to curb malpractice. Vote buying has remained a persistent challenge in recent elections across the country, with stakeholders warning it undermines the credibility of democratic institutions and disenfranchises voters who refuse inducements.
While commending INEC for improvements in logistics and result transmission, Yiaga Africa said urgent action is needed from law enforcement agencies and political parties to address vote trading and ensure future elections are free from undue influence. The group also called on citizens to resist attempts to sway their votes through monetary offers.
INEC has yet to respond publicly to Yiaga Africa’s findings on vote buying. Political observers say the latest reports could increase pressure on both federal and state authorities to prosecute offenders and strengthen safeguards ahead of upcoming elections.

Presidency hails Oyebanji’s win in South-West state, says outcome reflects Ekiti people’s trust in APC leadership
Presidency hails Oyebanji’s win in South-West state, says outcome reflects Ekiti people’s trust in APC leadership
President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State following his victory in the just-concluded re-election held across the South-West state on Sunday, 21 June 2026. The president extended his felicitations to Oyebanji in a statement released from Abuja, describing the result as a clear indication of voters’ confidence in the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.
Governor Oyebanji, who contested on the APC platform, secured a second term after defeating his closest rivals from other parties at the polls. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the official results late Sunday night, confirming Oyebanji’s lead across the majority of local government areas in Ekiti State.
The presidency noted that Oyebanji’s victory is significant for both the APC and the people of Ekiti, coming at a time when political analysts had predicted a tight contest. Tinubu urged the governor to continue prioritising development projects and good governance, stating that “the renewed mandate is an opportunity to deepen reforms and improve livelihoods across all communities.”
Although some opposition candidates have expressed reservations about aspects of the electoral process, there were no major incidents reported by security agencies during voting. The APC national headquarters has also issued a congratulatory message to Oyebanji, calling on all stakeholders to support his next term for the benefit of Ekiti residents.
Governor Oyebanji is expected to be sworn in for his second tenure later this year. Political observers say attention will now shift to how his administration addresses economic challenges and ongoing infrastructure projects across Ekiti State.

LASTMA Rescues 353 Road Accident Victims in Lagos Amid Heightened Rainy Season Risks
Agency urges motorists and commercial drivers to exercise caution as heavy rainfall worsens traffic conditions across state
Agency urges motorists and commercial drivers to exercise caution as heavy rainfall worsens traffic conditions across state
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the rescue of 353 victims from road accidents and emergency incidents across Lagos between January and May 2026. General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this on Saturday, warning all road users to prioritise safety as the rainy season intensifies and increases risks on major roads.
According to Bakare-Oki, the agency’s Rescue and Emergency Response Unit attended to a range of incidents involving both private vehicles and commercial transport operators in various parts of the state. Of the victims rescued within the five-month period, 207 were adult males, 137 adult females, and nine male children. He noted that swift response by LASTMA officers ensured timely medical attention for those injured.
The agency said these figures highlight the dangers faced by Lagos residents during the wet season when reduced visibility, slippery roads, and flooded intersections often lead to higher rates of traffic accidents. With rainfall persisting across the South-West state, LASTMA has stepped up patrols along major highways and deployed additional emergency teams to blackspots known for frequent crashes.
Bakare-Oki called on motorists, commercial bus drivers, okada riders and other stakeholders to avoid speeding, ensure proper vehicle maintenance, and obey traffic signals at all times. He further advised parents to monitor children’s movement around busy roads and urged members of the public to use designated pedestrian crossings. “We want everyone in Lagos to arrive safely at their destinations, especially as adverse weather conditions continue,” he said in a statement.
LASTMA restated its commitment to reducing accident rates through continuous public sensitisation campaigns and rapid emergency intervention. The agency also appealed for cooperation from commuters while assuring that emergency hotlines remain active for prompt assistance during road incidents.
