Presidency confirms fatalities as Nigerian Railway Corporation deploys rescue teams, cause of accident under investigation

Three passengers lost their lives on Monday following the derailment of a train on the Warri–Itakpe corridor near Agbor, Delta State. The incident, which occurred on the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS), prompted immediate deployment of emergency response teams by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and relevant authorities to the scene.

According to a statement issued by Kayode Opeifa, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NRC, the corporation swiftly dispatched emergency units to provide assistance to affected passengers and assess the situation. Opeifa said NRC is monitoring developments closely and pledged that further details would be released as investigations and rescue operations continue. The Presidency also confirmed the casualty figure in a statement on its official X handle, noting that all passengers have now been accounted for.

The cause of Monday’s derailment had not been disclosed as at press time. The accident comes barely a month after NRC temporarily suspended operations along the Warri–Itakpe route, citing operational exigencies and recommendations from engineers. The suspension was aimed at enabling critical assessments to improve safety and service delivery on the line.

“Emergency response teams and relevant authorities are currently at the scene attending to the situation and providing necessary assistance,” Opeifa stated in his official communication. He assured that support is being extended to those affected, while investigations are ongoing to determine what led to the derailment. The Presidency added that “members of the public are advised to rely only on verified information and official updates from the Nigerian Railway Corporation as investigations and response efforts continue.”

The NRC reiterated its commitment to passenger safety, promising a comprehensive statement once more facts emerge from ongoing inquiries. Meanwhile, stakeholders in Delta State have called for urgent improvements in rail infrastructure to prevent future incidents. The opposition could not be immediately reached for comment regarding Monday’s development.

According to community sources, the affected oil installations had been occupied by demonstrators demanding implementation of a Supreme Court judgment on constituency boundaries. This action, which disrupted operations at several key sites, prompted urgent engagement from both local leaders and the presidency.

The dispute over Warri Federal Constituency has persisted for years, with various ethnic groups raising concerns about political representation and resource allocation in the oil-rich region.
