Former Assistant Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Dennis Amachree, has stated that late General Sani Abacha, who died in Abuja on 8 June 1998, was not poisoned as widely speculated but suffered a heart attack. Amachree made this disclosure during an interview about his new book, challenging one of Nigeria’s most debated political mysteries nearly three decades on.
Amachree explained that following Abacha’s sudden demise at Aso Rock, security agencies immediately launched an investigation. He said many Nigerians believed rumours that the former military ruler had been poisoned by foreign agents or political rivals, particularly with stories alleging a ‘poisoned apple.’ However, the former DSS official stressed that investigators found no evidence to support any theory of assassination or food poisoning.
Abacha’s death at age 54 fuelled decades of speculation partly due to the secrecy surrounding his final hours and the absence of any publicly released autopsy. His regime remains controversial for alleged human rights abuses and corruption, yet some supporters still credit him with stabilising the economy and building up Nigeria’s foreign reserves. The lack of clear information has allowed various conspiracy theories to thrive among Nigerians.
During the probe, Amachree said DSS operatives questioned a woman who was reportedly with Abacha before he died. He recounted: “The girl who was with him when he died was later brought to me for questioning. When she entered my office, the first thing she said was, ‘I did not kill him.’ She was very direct about it.” According to Amachree, her account remained consistent under interrogation and provided crucial insight into Abacha’s final moments. “From everything she told me and from what I gathered during the investigation, I strongly believe it was a heart attack,” he concluded.
Amachree’s comments are expected to renew debate about the circumstances of Abacha’s passing but may not put an end to public interest in one of Nigeria’s most talked-about political deaths. Other officials and stakeholders have given conflicting accounts over the years. The opposition could not be immediately reached for comment on Amachree’s statement.

According to officials at the event, the upgraded facility will serve as a national hub for receiving, storing, and dispatching medicines and health commodities to federal and state healthcare centres.
The expansion is expected to address longstanding issues of inadequate storage space and substandard warehousing practices that have affected medicine distribution across Nigeria. Health experts note that poor storage conditions have previously led to wastage and reduced effectiveness of vital drugs. The facility’s launch comes at a time when access to quality medicines is considered critical for achieving universal health coverage targets set by the government.
Government representatives said the partnership with the Global Fund demonstrates Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its health system. Speaking during the commissioning, officials emphasised that improved warehousing will ensure better management of medicines for diseases such as malaria, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis. The opposition could not be immediately reached for comment.
With the warehouse now operational, authorities say attention will shift to ensuring efficient last-mile delivery of drugs across all regions. The federal government has denied recent reports claiming it scrapped the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS), insisting the agency remains fully functional across Nigeria. The clarification was issued in Abuja on Wednesday following widespread rumours suggesting NBAIS had been dissolved or merged with another body.
According to the statement, the Ministry of Education said there was no official directive to abolish NBAIS or alter its mandate. The ministry emphasised that all regulatory and academic activities under NBAIS would continue as normal, urging students, teachers and state governments to disregard any contrary information circulating online or offline.
The National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies is responsible for setting standards and conducting examinations in Arabic and Islamic education at secondary level nationwide. Stakeholders had expressed concern over the alleged scrapping, noting NBAIS’s importance for millions of pupils in northern states and other regions where Islamic education is a core part of the curriculum.
“Government has not taken any decision to scrap or restructure NBAIS,” a senior official said, adding that such decisions require due process involving wide consultations. “We urge all Nigerians to remain calm and continue their academic activities without fear of disruption.”
As at Wednesday, there was no official reaction from major educational unions or opposition parties regarding the rumour. The Ministry of Education advised anyone with questions about NBAIS operations to contact their state education boards or the board’s headquarters in Kaduna. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has commenced the release of original result slips for candidates who sat the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) across Nigeria. The announcement was made on Wednesday, with JAMB directing all candidates to access their slips through the board’s official website.
According to JAMB, the original result slip is a critical document required for admission processes into tertiary institutions nationwide. The board advised candidates to log in using their registration details and follow the approved procedure for printing, warning that it does not authorise any third-party vendors or agents for this service.
The release of original result slips marks a key stage in the admission cycle for universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. Over the years, JAMB has continued to streamline its processes to reduce fraud and ensure only genuine results are used in Nigeria’s admissions system. The board reminded candidates that only slips obtained directly from its portal would be accepted by institutions during screening and registration.

With the release now underway, successful UTME candidates have been advised to promptly print their original slips as part of preparations for post-UTME screenings and admission processes expected to commence in various institutions across Nigeria in the coming weeks.
