The International Press Institute (IPI) has called on Nigerian authorities to stop the arrest and detention of journalists in disputes over national security reporting. The global press freedom body made this appeal on Thursday, stressing that government crackdowns on media workers in Nigeria threaten freedom of expression and undermine efforts to address the country’s security challenges.
According to IPI, recent incidents where journalists have been detained or harassed by security agencies in different parts of Nigeria have sparked concern among media stakeholders and human rights advocates. The institute argued that such actions not only violate constitutional guarantees but also damage public trust in government institutions.
The call from IPI comes as Nigeria continues to grapple with a range of security issues across several regions, including banditry, kidnapping, and insurgency. Media organisations have faced increasing pressure over their coverage of these topics, with journalists sometimes accused of endangering national security or spreading misinformation. IPI warned that targeting journalists undermines the critical role the press plays in informing citizens and supporting democratic governance.
In a statement issued Thursday, the IPI insisted that authorities should address any perceived infractions through legal and transparent channels rather than resorting to arrests. “The arrest or intimidation of journalists is not the solution to disagreements between the media and security agencies,” the institute said. The group also urged government officials to engage with media representatives in constructive dialogue aimed at balancing national security concerns with press freedom.
IPI concluded by urging relevant agencies to respect due process and uphold Nigeria’s obligations under both its constitution and international law. The institute advised that fostering an environment where journalists can work freely is vital for public accountability and national development.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), under Operation Fansan Yamma Sector 1, has carried out fresh airstrikes on suspected terrorist strongholds across the North-West, including Sokoto and Kaduna states, on 18 and 19 June 2026. The coordinated missions disrupted criminal activities and resulted in the rescue of 22 kidnapped persons in Sokoto State.
According to NAF, precision airstrikes were conducted on identified terrorist enclaves within the Joint Operations Area, targeting camps believed to harbour armed bandits. In separate operations by Sector 2 troops of Operation Fansan, victims abducted in Sabon Birni and Isa Local Government Areas of Sokoto were freed following intelligence-led interventions on the ground.
These latest offensives come as security agencies intensify efforts to curb banditry and kidnapping in the North-West, a region that has witnessed a surge in violent attacks on rural communities. The joint operations are part of a broader strategy to deny armed groups safe haven and restore stability ahead of the farming season.
Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, NAF spokesman, confirmed that air operations around Kidandan area of Kaduna State also targeted criminal elements based on credible intelligence. “Our sustained surveillance and strikes have continued to degrade the operational capabilities of these groups,” Ejodame said in a written statement. He added that rescued victims had been handed over to relevant authorities for medical checks and reunion with their families.
Security analysts say the ability to combine air power with ground intelligence is critical for lasting impact against organised crime in the region. As at press time, no opposition parties had issued statements regarding the latest NAF operations. The military is expected to maintain pressure on identified hideouts, with further joint patrols planned across vulnerable border communities.
