Facility in Lekki aims to set new benchmark for aesthetic medicine and aftercare as demand for premium services rises

Dr Chidinma Akpa Pheoby, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of CGE Healthcare, has unveiled a new flagship medical centre in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, on Thursday. The launch event at 9A Oladimeji Alo drew healthcare professionals, industry stakeholders, celebrities, and business executives to witness the opening of what is positioned as a top-tier destination for aesthetic medicine and patient-centred care.

The ceremony featured a tour of the ultra-modern facility, complimentary consultations, goodwill remarks from invited guests, and a ribbon-cutting led by Dr Pheoby. Attendees were given an exclusive look at the centre’s advanced medical technology, treatment suites, and patient recovery areas designed to meet international standards.

The opening of CGE Healthcare comes at a time when Lagos is seeing increased demand for regulated wellness and aesthetic services. Many Nigerians have previously sought such treatments abroad due to concerns over safety and quality. The facility’s management said its focus on clinical excellence, body security, and premium aftercare is intended to bridge this gap and retain more patients within Nigeria.

Speaking during the launch, Dr Chidinma Akpa Pheoby stated: “CGE Healthcare was built on one simple belief: everyone deserves to feel safe, confident, and cared for. Every detail of this facility was intentionally designed to deliver excellence, compassion, and a patient experience that inspires trust. This is more than a clinic; it is a new home for confidence.”

Industry observers say the centre’s entry could raise standards across the private healthcare sector in Lagos and beyond. With its emphasis on regulated practice and international best practices in patient care, CGE Healthcare is expected to attract both local clients and Nigerians in the diaspora seeking quality medical procedures at home.

National body threatens nationwide action if Oyo government fails to address LAUTECH teaching hospital doctors’ grievances

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has expressed strong support for doctors at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, warning of a possible indefinite strike if their demands remain unmet. The association made its position known on Saturday, 27 June 2026, as tensions continue between the medical staff and the Oyo State government over welfare issues.

According to NARD, its leadership is closely monitoring the situation at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital following complaints from resident doctors about unpaid salaries and poor working conditions. The national body emphasised that continued neglect of these issues could trigger industrial action across teaching hospitals nationwide, disrupting healthcare services for thousands of Nigerians.

The situation at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital has raised concerns among healthcare workers and patients alike. Resident doctors in the facility have repeatedly highlighted delayed salary payments and lack of essential equipment, which they say is hampering effective delivery of medical services. The threat from NARD comes amid broader concerns about brain drain and deteriorating standards in Nigeria’s public health sector.

In an official statement released on Saturday, NARD leadership called on the Oyo State government to urgently resolve outstanding issues with the LAUTECH doctors to avoid escalation. “We will not hesitate to declare an indefinite nationwide strike if government continues to ignore our colleagues’ plight,” the statement said. However, as at press time, Oyo State officials have not issued a formal response to NARD’s warning.

With ongoing negotiations yet to yield results, medical observers warn that a nationwide strike by resident doctors could paralyse teaching hospitals across Nigeria, compounding existing challenges in the health sector. Stakeholders are urging all parties involved to return to dialogue and prioritise patient care above other interests.

Ex-NBA Chairman Okoko Urges Federal Government to License Civilian Gun Ownership in Anambra

Calls for review of firearms law spark fresh debate as security agencies face criticism over checkpoints and response times

Calls for review of firearms law spark fresh debate as security agencies face criticism over checkpoints and response times

Former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Idemili Branch, Benjamin Chukwudi Okoko, has called on the Federal Government to allow law-abiding Nigerians to legally own and carry firearms for self-defence, citing the increasing rate of insecurity nationwide. Okoko made this appeal on Thursday in Onitsha, Anambra State, stressing that many residents have become easy targets for armed men due to limited ability to protect themselves.

Okoko argued that government should urgently review the country’s firearms laws and establish a regulated licensing system so responsible citizens can acquire arms for personal protection. ‘Government should liberalise the ownership of arms and ammunition to enable Nigerians procure arms for self-defence against gunmen and bandits,’ Okoko said while addressing journalists in Anambra. He clarified that his proposal was not an invitation to indiscriminate possession of firearms but a measure to empower citizens where security agencies are unable to respond promptly.

The former NBA chairman also criticised the proliferation of security checkpoints across the South-East, alleging that many have become centres of extortion rather than effective crime prevention. He pointed out that personnel from the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Customs Service, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and local vigilante groups now operate numerous roadblocks, resulting in delays for motorists and increased transport costs. According to Okoko, these checkpoints waste commuters’ time, increase fuel consumption, and create hardship for businesses and travellers.

In addition, Okoko condemned repeated cargo inspections by customs officers on goods already cleared at seaports. He said such practices discourage business activities and raise the cost of moving goods within Nigeria. His comments come amid renewed public debate over whether relaxing Nigeria’s strict firearms regulations would improve personal safety or worsen insecurity by increasing weapon circulation.

Nigeria currently operates one of Africa’s toughest firearms licensing regimes under the Firearms Act. The law requires government approval before civilians can possess specified categories of weapons. While supporters of civilian gun ownership say it would help communities facing frequent attacks by armed men, opponents warn it could escalate violence if not properly managed. Security agencies have not issued any official response to Okoko’s suggestions as at press time.
