Mental health professionals in Lagos have raised fresh concerns over the impact of toxic friendships on well-being, advising residents to recognise and address harmful relationship patterns as National Best Friends Day is observed across Nigeria on Saturday. The warning comes amid growing attention to the role of social connections in urban stress and emotional health.
Experts told reporters that while true friendship provides crucial support, many Nigerians continue to excuse negative behaviours—such as constant competition, disrespect for boundaries, and one-sided demands—that may drain them emotionally. According to psychologists, common red flags include friends who only appear when they need assistance, those who habitually gossip, make belittling jokes at others’ expense, or are absent during difficult times.
Dr. Ifeanyi Okoye, a clinical psychologist at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), said recognising such red flags early could prevent long-term emotional distress. “We see many young people in Lagos struggling with anxiety or low self-esteem because they are caught in unhealthy friendships but feel pressured to ignore obvious warning signs,” Okoye stated during a phone interview. He urged residents not to normalise situations where their boundaries are ignored or their achievements constantly undermined.
Community advocates say the issue has become more pronounced as urban life intensifies. “People often excuse toxic behaviour out of loyalty or fear of loneliness,” said Chidinma Onwudiwe, a social worker based in Surulere. “But if every interaction leaves you feeling drained or unsupported, it’s time to reassess that relationship.”
The experts recommend that individuals reflect on whether their friendships encourage personal growth or perpetuate stress. They advise open communication about boundaries and mutual support as key steps towards healthier relationships. Local mental health NGOs have also announced plans to hold free workshops in Ikeja and Victoria Island throughout June, aiming to help residents build stronger support networks.
