According to the minister, government has been working with industry stakeholders and security agencies to address issues of pipeline vandalism and crude theft, which have significantly affected output in recent years. Nigeria’s production has struggled below OPEC quotas, with official figures often falling below 1.5 million barrels per day due to operational setbacks and insecurity in the Niger Delta.
Lokpobiri explained that boosting daily output to 2.5 million barrels is critical for meeting fiscal projections and supporting the naira, given the country’s heavy reliance on petroleum exports for foreign exchange earnings. The minister said ongoing reforms and investment drives are expected to attract new players into upstream operations and facilitate repairs of existing infrastructure.
“Our objective is clear—to ensure Nigeria maximises its oil potential for the benefit of all citizens,” Lokpobiri said. He added that collaboration with host communities would be prioritised under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) framework to promote peace and sustainable operations. The minister did not give a timeline but noted that results would depend on sustained security interventions.
Industry analysts say achieving the 2.5 million barrels per day target will require urgent investment in security, technology upgrades, and transparent governance practices. They also urged government to ensure timely disbursement of funds for pipeline repairs and community engagement initiatives.
