The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has directed major telecom operators to compensate over 75 million subscribers nationwide for poor network quality, following widespread complaints of dropped calls, slow internet and service disruptions. The directive, which took effect from 29 March 2026, was enforced after months of customer agitation across various states in Nigeria.

According to the NCC, the compensation process involved awarding airtime credits to affected customers rather than direct cash payments. The value granted was based on each subscriber’s average spending pattern and whether they resided in areas where service quality fell below regulatory benchmarks. Reports reviewed at the NCC’s 109th Board Meeting confirmed that operators had complied with the initial directive by crediting more than 75 million users.

This intervention comes amid growing concerns over deteriorating telecom services that have impacted millions relying on mobile networks for business, banking and daily communications. The commission noted that persistent complaints about network issues—including inability to complete calls and repeated service failures—prompted its decision to mandate compensation as a measure of accountability and consumer protection within Nigeria’s telecoms sector.

NCC spokespersons stated that while operators claim to have fulfilled their obligations, the commission has commenced an independent verification exercise to ensure all eligible subscribers are accurately compensated. “We are reviewing operator submissions and monitoring compliance closely,” an NCC official said during a briefing. The regulator also disclosed that telecom firms are investing in over 12,000 new sites for coverage expansion, with more than 5,000 already completed as at June 2026.

Subscribers are advised to confirm if they received compensation by checking recent SMS notifications from their network provider, reviewing airtime balances, contacting customer care lines or visiting official self-service platforms. Those who believe they were affected but did not receive any benefit are encouraged to reach out directly to their service provider for clarification. The development places renewed pressure on operators—such as MTN, Airtel, Glo and 9mobile—to improve service delivery amidst mounting public scrutiny.

According to Mr Bachelor, who shared details of the incident on X (formerly Twitter), he was in his apartment when the landlord’s relatives arrived and disclosed that their late brother—who is also the landlord’s father—had been buried in the middle of his sitting room. “He was buried right in my living room, and I was not aware until they came around today,” he stated.

The family explained that they planned to move the body to another location they had prepared and assured Mr Bachelor that necessary repairs would be made to his sitting room after the exhumation. The tenant noted that he was the first occupant of the newly built house and had spent over a year there before learning about the burial.

The incident has raised fresh concerns among Lagos residents about transparency from landlords regarding property histories.
