Thousands of Nigerians living in Toronto, Canada, have teamed up with Ghanaian supporters to rally behind the Black Stars ahead of their opening group match against Panama at the ongoing FIFA World Cup. The show of solidarity was confirmed on Wednesday by Chairman of the Unified Nigeria Supporters Club, Vincent Okumagba, who spoke from his base in Canada.
Okumagba stated that a large contingent of Nigerian residents had resolved to turn out in massive numbers to support the Ghanaian national team during their first group game scheduled for Thursday morning. He also revealed that scores of Ghanaian fans were expected to arrive in Toronto on Monday, with the majority departing Accra on Sunday.
This coordinated support comes as both nations miss out on direct participation, with Nigeria’s Super Eagles absent from this edition of the tournament. The joint mobilisation reflects a growing spirit of West African unity among diaspora communities, particularly when it comes to major sporting events like the FIFA World Cup.
“We are coming together as Africans to give our brothers all the support they need,” Okumagba said. He explained that arrangements had been made for banners, drums and other paraphernalia typical of Nigerian supporters’ groups at international matches. According to him, the collaboration was initiated following discussions between leaders of Nigerian and Ghanaian supporter unions based in Canada.
Ghana’s Black Stars are seeking a strong start after previous challenges at recent international tournaments. Their upcoming fixture against Panama is seen as an opportunity to advance from the group stage and restore pride after missing out on knockout rounds in earlier competitions. Stakeholders believe robust support from fellow Africans could boost team morale and performance.

A Lagos tenant, identified as Mr Bachelor, has revealed he lived for more than a year in a Surulere apartment without knowing his landlord’s late father was buried beneath the living room floor. The discovery was made on September 20, 2026, when members of the landlord’s family visited the property and informed the tenant of their intention to exhume the remains.
According to Mr Bachelor, who shared details of the incident on X (formerly Twitter), he was in his apartment when the landlord’s relatives arrived and disclosed that their late brother—who is also the landlord’s father—had been buried in the middle of his sitting room. “He was buried right in my living room, and I was not aware until they came around today,” he stated.
The family explained that they planned to move the body to another location they had prepared and assured Mr Bachelor that necessary repairs would be made to his sitting room after the exhumation. The tenant noted that he was the first occupant of the newly built house and had spent over a year there before learning about the burial.
The incident has raised fresh concerns among Lagos residents about transparency from landlords regarding property histories. Some social media users responding to Mr Bachelor’s post urged prospective tenants across Nigeria to conduct due diligence before moving into rental properties. Others called for clearer regulations around residential burials and disclosure by property owners.
