Command recovers stolen motorcycle, generator parts worth ₦650,000; Police refute claims of Oyo abduction rescue

Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested three suspects linked to cultism, armed robbery, and the diversion of a generator in separate operations across the state. The arrests were made following recent intelligence-led efforts in Ago-Iwoye, Mowe, and Warewa divisions, according to a statement issued by DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the command’s spokesperson, on Friday.

One of the suspects, identified as a notorious leader of the Eiye Confraternity operating in the Mowe area, was apprehended by officers from the Mowe Division. In addition to his arrest, police recovered a stolen motorcycle and parts of a 10KVA generator valued at ₦650,000 during follow-up investigations. Two other suspects were also nabbed in connection with related cult and robbery incidents within the state.

The Ogun Police Command said these arrests come amid increased concerns over cult-related violence and robberies in South-West Nigeria. Residents have repeatedly called for tougher action against cult groups and criminal gangs that disrupt local communities and threaten public safety.

In his statement, DSP Babaseyi emphasised that the operations were part of ongoing community-responsive policing strategies. He further clarified that reports circulating about the rescue of kidnap victims in Oyo State by Ogun police operatives were false. “The command wishes to state categorically that no such rescue operation was carried out by our officers in Oyo State,” Babaseyi said.

The command reiterated its commitment to intensifying security patrols and intelligence gathering across all divisions. Stakeholders have urged police authorities to sustain these measures to ensure lasting peace in Ogun and neighbouring states affected by similar security challenges.

Island nation secure vital point, boosting hopes of advancing as they stun former champions in dramatic encounter

Cape Verde stunned football fans on Monday as the national team forced a 2–2 draw against Uruguay in their FIFA World Cup group stage match. The thrilling contest took place at a neutral venue, where the underdogs from West Africa twice came from behind to share the spoils with the South American giants.

The match opened with Uruguay taking an early lead, but Cape Verde responded swiftly to level the score. Uruguay again went ahead, only for Cape Verde to show resilience and net another equaliser in the second half. The result left both teams with a point each, keeping qualification hopes alive for Cape Verde, who are making waves at this tournament.

This outcome marks one of the most remarkable results for Cape Verde on the world stage and is significant given Uruguay’s pedigree as former world champions. For many Nigerians and African football followers, Cape Verde’s performance serves as encouragement that smaller nations can compete with global heavyweights when given the opportunity.

There were no immediate official statements from either team’s coaches after the final whistle. However, analysts have praised Cape Verde’s tactical discipline and fighting spirit throughout the match. Uruguayan supporters were left disappointed by their side’s inability to close out victory despite holding the lead twice during the game.

With this draw, Cape Verde will look to build momentum as they prepare for their remaining group fixtures. The result also puts pressure on Uruguay, who now face an uphill task to secure progression. Football enthusiasts across Africa will be watching keenly to see if Cape Verde can continue their impressive run at this year’s World Cup.

Market analysts highlight improved performance of key companies as investors seek safe bets amid economic uncertainty

Fidson Healthcare, Africa Prudential, and Access Holdings have emerged as the leading stock picks on the Nigerian Exchange for this week, with market analysts pointing to their recent strong performance and resilience in a volatile economic environment. The selection was announced on Monday in Lagos, reflecting renewed investor interest in companies demonstrating stability and growth potential.

The stocks were chosen based on a review of their recent trading activity, profitability, and positive outlook within the pharmaceutical, financial services, and banking sectors. Analysts noted that Fidson Healthcare has continued to benefit from increased demand for essential medicines, while Africa Prudential’s digital transformation initiatives have attracted institutional investors. Access Holdings, one of Nigeria’s largest banking groups, also maintained robust returns despite broader sector headwinds.

This development comes as investors across Nigeria remain cautious due to persistent inflationary pressures and fluctuations in naira value. The Nigerian Exchange has witnessed heightened activity in defensive stocks as market participants look for companies capable of weathering macroeconomic shocks. Experts say the latest picks signal a preference for firms with consistent dividend records and sound management practices.

Although official statements from the selected companies were not immediately available as at press time, financial analysts stress that these picks could help guide both retail and institutional investors navigating current market uncertainties. They advise potential investors to conduct due diligence before making portfolio decisions.

Market watchers will be closely monitoring how these stocks perform through the week, especially in light of upcoming quarterly results and policy announcements from regulatory authorities. The focus remains on sectors that can deliver steady earnings growth despite economic challenges facing Nigeria.
