Arrests come weeks after deadly abduction bid in Obafemi Owode; command says actionable intelligence led to breakthrough
The Ogun State Police Command has foiled an alleged kidnap attempt targeting a Chinese national along the Ijebu-Ode–Odogbolu Expressway, arresting two suspects identified as Chinedu Onwuemena, 41, and Jimoh Ojo, 37. The suspects were apprehended on Sunday, 9 June 2026, following what police described as credible intelligence about an imminent abduction in the area.
According to a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the Divisional Police Officer of Obalende Division received information regarding the plot and quickly mobilised surveillance operatives to the location. The suspects were reportedly intercepted at about 5:30 p.m. while allegedly making arrangements to carry out the kidnapping and demand a ransom of ₦50 million for their intended victim.
This development comes barely weeks after a similar incident at Magbon in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area, where a soldier and four others were killed during a foiled kidnap attempt involving Chinese expatriates. Kidnapping for ransom remains a pressing security challenge in Ogun State and across Nigeria’s South-West region, with foreign nationals often targeted by criminal gangs operating along major highways and industrial corridors.
DSP Babaseyi said the latest arrests demonstrate police resolve to disrupt kidnapping syndicates in the state. “The command acted swiftly based on actionable intelligence to prevent another tragedy,” he stated in his written press release on Wednesday. He added that investigations are ongoing and that further details would be made available as at when due.
Security analysts say repeated abduction attempts highlight persistent threats facing both local residents and foreign investors in Ogun State. The police command has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, while assuring that proactive patrols would be intensified along key transport routes. No group has claimed responsibility for the recent plots as at press time.

The arrests were made on Tuesday during a coordinated operation targeting unlicensed factories suspected of manufacturing counterfeit drinks.
The police said the crackdown followed intelligence reports indicating a rise in fake spirits and wines circulating in major markets, particularly in Lagos Mainland and Ikeja. Officers raided multiple premises where they discovered equipment, empty bottles, labels of popular brands, and large quantities of adulterated alcohol ready for sale. The suspects, whose exact number was not disclosed, are currently in custody pending further investigation.
Counterfeit alcoholic drinks have become a growing concern for health officials and regulatory agencies. According to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), such products pose significant risks to consumers due to the use of harmful chemicals and unsanitary production methods. Many Nigerians have reported cases of severe illness linked to consumption of fake beverages, prompting renewed calls for stricter enforcement.
Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer said the command is working closely with NAFDAC to ensure all those behind the operation are brought to justice. “We advise members of the public to be vigilant when purchasing alcoholic drinks and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement agencies,” he stated at a press briefing on Tuesday.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to uncover additional networks involved in counterfeit production, while market leaders have pledged support for efforts aimed at protecting public health. Police urged retailers to verify their suppliers and warned that anyone found selling fake products will face prosecution under existing laws.
