Renowned Nollywood actor and scholar, Dr. Kola Oyewo, died on Wednesday, 12 June 2026, at the age of 80 in Osun State. The news of his passing was confirmed by his family and fellow entertainers, who paid tribute to his decades-long impact on Nigerian theatre and film.

Dr. Oyewo, born on 27 March 1946 in Oba-Ile, Osun State (South-West), grew up within a royal household under the care of his uncle, the reigning king. He began his professional acting career in 1964 and quickly established himself as a towering figure in the country’s creative industry.

He pursued higher education at Obafemi Awolowo University, earning a certificate in dramatic arts and Yoruba oral literature before bagging a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Arts in 1995. He later obtained both a Master’s degree and a PhD in Drama from the University of Ibadan.

The late actor was widely respected not only for his performances but also for his dedication to academic mentorship. Over his career spanning more than five decades, Dr. Oyewo contributed significantly to the promotion of indigenous storytelling, traditional theatre forms, and the training of emerging talents within Nigeria’s creative sector.

Following confirmation of his death, tributes poured in from colleagues across Nollywood and academia. Many described him as a mentor whose influence shaped contemporary Nigerian drama and film. The Association of Nigerian Theatre Practitioners said Dr. Oyewo would be remembered for “his lifelong commitment to advancing the arts and culture.”

Officials said the move follows an application from General Abdulsalami seeking a dedicated site within the capital city to build a centre focused on research, dialogue, and national development initiatives. President Bola Tinubu on Saturday paid tribute to the late former Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major-General Rabe Abubakar (rtd), in Abuja, assuring Nigerians that government will not bow to terrorists’ demands for the release of their detained members. Tinubu spoke during a condolence message issued following news of Abubakar’s passing.

According to the president, the federal government remains resolute in its stance against negotiating with any armed group or terrorist organisation seeking to free individuals held for security-related offences. He stressed that the loss of Major-General Abubakar is a painful blow to Nigeria’s defence community and described him as a dedicated officer who contributed immensely to national security during his years of service.

Abubakar, who served as Chief of Defence Intelligence before retiring, was known for his commitment to intelligence operations and strengthening Nigeria’s response to internal security threats.
