Club funds new vocational facility at Ikeja Junior High School; President Lawal pledges free instructor salaries for six months
The Rotary Club of Ikeja, under Rotary International District 9111, has commissioned a fully funded, solar-powered vocational training centre for special needs students at Ikeja Junior High School, Lagos State. The initiative was unveiled on Thursday as part of efforts to empower children living with disabilities with practical entrepreneurship skills and promote their self-reliance.
According to Rotary Club President Olanrewaju Lawal, the new centre will offer training in fashion design, tailoring, catering, barbing and hairdressing. Lawal stated that the project aims to equip students with employable skills that can help them earn income and sustain themselves after leaving secondary school. “This facility will greatly benefit young people, especially those transitioning from secondary school before gaining admission into higher institutions. It will keep them meaningfully engaged while providing opportunities to earn income and sustain themselves,” Lawal said during the commissioning ceremony.
She added that the club will pay instructors’ salaries for the first six months to ensure smooth take-off of the programme. Lawal further explained that graduates from the centre are expected to train others in their communities, thereby multiplying the impact of the initiative.
The establishment of the vocational training centre comes amid rising unemployment rates and increasing advocacy for inclusive education across Nigeria. Stakeholders have called for more support for persons with disabilities (PWDs) to ensure they have equal access to skill acquisition and economic opportunities.
The Rotary Club’s intervention is expected to complement government efforts towards supporting PWDs in Lagos State and beyond. The club says it will continue to monitor progress at the centre and explore partnerships that can expand similar projects to other parts of the state.

DIG Orders Immediate Security Reinforcement in Aba to Curb Violent Crimes
Police directive comes after recent spike in armed attacks and robberies across key commercial areas of Abia South
Police directive comes after recent spike in armed attacks and robberies across key commercial areas of Abia South
The Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) has directed security agencies in Aba, Abia State, to urgently intensify operations against violent crimes following a rise in armed attacks and robberies in the city. The order was issued on Wednesday, June 17, as concerns mount over the safety of residents and businesses in the commercial hub of the South-East.
Security operatives have been instructed to increase patrols and surveillance across major roads, markets, and residential neighbourhoods notorious for criminal activity. The DIG’s intervention follows reports of recent incidents where armed men targeted both traders and commuters, leading to injuries and significant property losses. Law enforcement officers are expected to collaborate with local vigilante groups and other stakeholders to restore calm.
Aba’s status as a major economic centre in Abia South has made it a target for criminal elements, especially as economic hardship persists nationwide. Residents have repeatedly called for better protection amid fears that unchecked violence could disrupt commerce and threaten livelihoods in one of Nigeria’s most industrious cities.
According to police authorities, the new measures will include increased checkpoints, intelligence gathering, and community engagement efforts. While security personnel have assured citizens of their commitment to safeguarding lives and property, some local leaders have urged government to deploy additional resources for lasting peace.
The police said they would continue monitoring the situation closely and warned that anyone found engaging in violent crimes would be prosecuted according to the law. Community members are encouraged to report suspicious activities promptly as security agencies work to dismantle criminal networks operating within Aba.

Kano Magistrate Court Jails Man, Fines Him ₦100,000 for Storing Human Faeces Outside Home
Environmental authorities say health risk triggered prosecution after residents’ complaints; convict reportedly collected waste for resale as fertiliser
Environmental authorities say health risk triggered prosecution after residents’ complaints; convict reportedly collected waste for resale as fertiliser
A magistrate court in Kano State on Monday sentenced Mohammed Saidu to two weeks in jail and imposed a ₦100,000 fine after finding him guilty of storing multiple bags of human faeces outside his residence. The case, which unfolded in a densely populated area of Kano metropolis, followed persistent complaints from neighbours about the offensive odour and health risks posed by the stored waste.
According to local authorities, residents had repeatedly appealed to Saidu to desist from the practice without success, prompting them to petition environmental regulators. Officials said environmental health officers visited the scene and discovered dozens of bags filled with human waste, which were being kept in an open area next to Saidu’s home.
Saidu earns his living by emptying septic tanks and was found to have been collecting the faecal waste for resale to farmers as organic fertiliser—an informal trade observed in parts of northern Nigeria. However, the unsanitary storage method created a serious public health hazard for those living nearby.
Delivering judgment, the magistrate noted that Saidu’s actions violated environmental sanitation laws and endangered community health. Environmental officials welcomed the verdict as a signal that similar offences would not be tolerated. The court also warned other residents against improper disposal or storage of hazardous waste materials.
While no opposition group or lawyer issued a public response as at press time, authorities say they will intensify monitoring and enforcement of hygiene standards across Kano metropolis. Residents have called on government agencies to provide safer alternatives for waste disposal and ensure regular inspections in affected neighbourhoods.

Cape Verde Goalkeeper Vozinha Reunites With Mother Ahead of World Cup Decider
Visa breakthrough allows Dias’ mother to attend Blue Sharks’ next FIFA World Cup match after Spain draw heroics
Visa breakthrough allows Dias’ mother to attend Blue Sharks’ next FIFA World Cup match after Spain draw heroics
Josimar “Vozinha” Dias, first-choice goalkeeper for the Cape Verde national football team, will be reunited with his mother ahead of the country’s crucial next fixture at the FIFA World Cup. The emotional reunion comes after officials resolved visa challenges that previously barred her from travelling, according to updates on Tuesday evening.
Dias, who has become a symbol of Cape Verde’s historic campaign, rose to international prominence following his standout performance in their debut World Cup match against Spain. The veteran shot-stopper made several critical saves, helping the Blue Sharks force a draw against one of the tournament favourites. The result sparked widespread celebrations in Praia and among Cape Verdean communities globally, as fans hailed the encounter as a milestone in their nation’s sporting history.
Despite the euphoria surrounding Cape Verde’s achievement, Dias had earlier shared that his mother was unable to witness his World Cup debut in person due to unresolved travel documentation. The issue drew attention from football supporters and diaspora groups, who expressed solidarity with the player and called for intervention by relevant authorities.
Speaking after news of the visa breakthrough emerged, Dias expressed gratitude for the support he received during a challenging period. “It means so much to have my mother here for such an important moment,” he said. Team officials noted that her presence is expected to boost morale in camp as Cape Verde prepares for its next match, which many analysts describe as decisive for their progression in the tournament.
The Blue Sharks will now focus on building on their momentum from the Spain fixture as they seek qualification from their group. Stakeholders in African football have praised both Dias’ resilience and the efforts made to resolve his family’s travel situation, describing it as an inspiring chapter in Cape Verde’s ongoing World Cup journey.
