Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) has announced his intention to sponsor a bill introducing a single six-year tenure for Nigeria’s President and state governors after the 2027 general elections. Bamidele made this disclosure during an interview with journalists in his Abuja office on Tuesday.

According to Bamidele, the proposed legislation will be among the first bills he will present when the 11th Senate is inaugurated. He argued that replacing the current two-term system with a single six-year mandate will allow elected leaders to focus on delivering good governance rather than spending valuable time and resources on re-election campaigns.

He said, “One of the first set of bills that I look forward to moving, by God’s grace, when we come back for the 11th Senate, God willing, is for a bill that will only make it possible for anyone who wants to be president of this country, or governor in any part of this country, to spend only one term of six years.”

Bamidele explained further that under the current arrangement, officeholders spend nearly half of their first term making political calculations and strategising for a second term. “So that you don’t even have to worry about wasting almost one and a half years of your first term thinking and struggling and looking forward to how you’ll be re-elected,” he stated. “If you know you are there for six years, only one tenure, you put in your best from day one. You know this is the only chance that you have.”

The Senate Leader acknowledged potential opposition from stakeholders but maintained lawmakers have a duty to pursue reforms they believe will strengthen Nigeria’s democracy. “That’s my opinion. It doesn’t mean everybody will agree with me. But it also does not mean that I am prevented from doing that because that has not been the law,” Bamidele said.

The proposed single-term reform has long been debated in Nigeria’s political circles as a way to improve governance and reduce election-related tensions. However, it remains unclear how much support such a bill will attract across party lines when introduced in the next National Assembly.
