SGF Akume, speaking for the President, says government will intensify security operations and address economic hardship

President Bola Tinubu has declared that Nigeria will never yield to terror, banditry or any form of criminal intimidation, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to tackling insecurity and economic hardship. This position was communicated on Sunday at the National Inter-Denominational Church Service held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

Representing President Tinubu, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, told congregants that government is aware of current economic challenges facing citizens and is working to mitigate their impact. “Government is sensitive to all these pains, shares in these pains and has heard your cries,” Akume said while reading a statement on behalf of the president. He further assured that Tinubu’s administration would intensify efforts to deliver democratic dividends and address socio-economic difficulties nationwide.

Akume explained that federal authorities remain focused on protecting lives and property across all regions, with additional support provided to security agencies for effective response to threats. He also highlighted ongoing efforts for the safe release of persons held in captivity by criminal groups. “The government of Nigeria shall never succumb to terror, banditry or any form of criminal intimidation,” Akume stated during the service.

Marking 27 years since the return to democratic rule in 1999, Akume paid tribute to citizens and pro-democracy activists who struggled for restoration of democracy, recalling sacrifices made during the June 12 movement. He said many paid with persecution, injury or even death so that Nigerians could enjoy uninterrupted civil rule.

With preparations for the 2027 general elections underway, Akume urged Nigerians to reject violence and hate speech, calling instead for unity in defence of democracy. No immediate opposition reaction was available at press time regarding Tinubu’s Democracy Day remarks.
