State authorities urge residents to verify medicines after discovery of fake antibiotics in local pharmacies and markets

The Enugu State Government has issued a public alert on Friday, 19 June 2026, warning residents about the circulation of counterfeit Augmentin tablets within the state. The announcement follows reports that fake versions of the widely used antibiotic have been found in several pharmacies and open markets across Enugu metropolis and surrounding areas.

According to state health officials, the counterfeit tablets were discovered during routine inspections carried out by regulatory agencies. The authorities did not specify the exact number of affected outlets but stated that the fake medicines were detected in multiple locations, raising concerns about public safety and the risk of treatment failure among patients relying on antibiotics.

Augmentin, a combination antibiotic containing amoxicillin and clavulanic acid, is commonly prescribed for bacterial infections. The presence of counterfeit products poses significant health dangers, especially as many Nigerians depend on such medications for treating common illnesses. Health experts warn that consuming fake antibiotics can lead to ineffective treatment, worsening of medical conditions, and increased resistance to genuine drugs.

Enugu State Ministry of Health has advised all residents to purchase medicines only from licensed pharmacies and to check for authenticity features such as NAFDAC registration numbers and security seals before buying any pharmaceutical products. “We urge members of the public to be vigilant when buying medicines,” a spokesperson from the ministry stated. “Any suspicious or unregistered drugs should be reported immediately to health authorities or NAFDAC offices in Enugu.”

The government said it is working closely with law enforcement agencies and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to track down distributors of the counterfeit tablets. Officials also assured residents that regular monitoring will continue across medicine outlets statewide. As at press time, no arrests had been made in connection with the fake Augmentin, but investigations are ongoing.

Residents are encouraged to report any suspected counterfeit medicines or adverse drug reactions via official state health hotlines or at designated hospitals. The Ministry of Health reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public health through strict enforcement of pharmaceutical regulations.

Command says measures will prevent violence and safeguard voters as state prepares for high-stakes poll in South-West

The Ekiti State Police Command has announced the implementation of movement restrictions and heightened security arrangements across the state ahead of the 2026 governorship election. The announcement was made on Friday, June 19, as authorities intensified efforts to ensure a peaceful electoral process in all local government areas.

According to police officials, the restrictions are part of a wider strategy to prevent any breakdown of law and order before, during, and after the election. The command emphasised that only essential workers and accredited electoral officials would be exempted from the movement ban on election day. Security checkpoints are being established at major entry and exit points within Ekiti State, while patrols have been increased in known flashpoints.

The measures come as political tensions rise with parties ramping up campaigns in the South-West state. Past elections in Ekiti have seen incidents of ballot snatching and clashes between rival supporters, prompting concerns from civil society groups about voter safety. The police command stated that these new steps are necessary to reassure residents and deter any attempts at disruption.

“We want to assure Ekiti people that adequate security will be provided across all polling units,” a senior officer at the command said during a press briefing in Ado-Ekiti. “Our men are fully mobilised to respond promptly to any threat or illegal activity.” The officer also warned that anyone caught violating movement restrictions or attempting to interfere with the voting process would face arrest and prosecution.

With the governorship poll seen as a key test ahead of national elections, stakeholders say transparent policing will be crucial for public confidence. Civil society organisations have urged law enforcement agencies to remain neutral and professional throughout the exercise. The police command said it would continue consultations with other security agencies, INEC officials, and political party representatives in the days leading up to the vote.
