Programme offers intensive Boeing 737NG technical training for Nigerian engineers, aims to boost local capacity and safety compliance

ValueJet Managing Director, Omololu Majekodunmi, has flagged off Boeing’s Advanced Technical Training Programme for Nigerian airline engineers in Lagos, describing the initiative as a major investment in the nation’s aviation future. The six-week training commenced on 16 June and is scheduled to run through 29 July, focusing on operational safety and technical competence within the sector.

The training, which targets ValueJet’s team of engineers, is being conducted by Boeing specialists and covers the Boeing 737 Next-Generation (737NG) aircraft. Participants will receive comprehensive instruction in avionics, airframe maintenance, powerplant systems, electrical components, troubleshooting techniques and operational best practices aligned with international safety standards.

Majekodunmi said at the opening session that safety remains the foundation of ValueJet Airlines’ operations. He emphasised that investing in advanced technical training is key to improving Nigeria’s aviation sector and ensuring global competitiveness. “We believe this programme will not only raise technical standards but also enhance operational reliability across our fleet,” he stated during his speech.

Boeing’s facilitation of the training forms part of its ongoing commitment to workforce development and aviation safety improvement across Africa. Upon completion of the programme, engineers are expected to receive European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA)-aligned theoretical certification, positioning them for higher compliance with international regulations. Industry observers say such initiatives are critical as Nigerian airlines seek to reduce incidents linked to human error and adapt to evolving global standards.

Aviation stakeholders have welcomed the capacity-building effort. According to sector experts, access to OEM-led training will help bridge skills gaps within Nigeria’s fast-growing aviation market while bolstering public confidence in local carriers. The training is expected to influence future maintenance practices and open up more opportunities for Nigerian engineers both locally and internationally.

Tensions rise as rival lawyers clash over authority to represent PDP, with judge setting expedited timetable for case

A Federal High Court in Abuja witnessed intense disagreement on Friday over who is legally recognised to represent the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in an ongoing leadership tussle. The court session, held on 19 June, was marked by heated exchanges between counsel claiming authority to speak for the PDP, prompting the presiding judge to intervene and grant an accelerated hearing of the substantive suit.

The drama unfolded when two separate legal teams appeared before the court, each asserting they had valid instructions from different PDP factions. The confrontation delayed proceedings briefly as both sides sought recognition from the bench. The judge eventually ruled that all processes must be harmonised promptly and fixed an expedited hearing schedule, emphasising the need to resolve the matter without unnecessary delay.

The case stems from longstanding divisions within Nigeria’s main opposition party over its national leadership structure. The dispute has deepened since state congresses and national convention arrangements became a flashpoint for rival groups seeking control ahead of upcoming elections. Many party members believe a swift judicial resolution is crucial to stabilising the PDP before critical electoral timelines elapse.

Court officials declined public comment after the proceedings, while both factions maintained their claims outside the courtroom. One senior lawyer stated that “the interest of democracy demands this issue is settled quickly so PDP can focus on its role as a credible opposition.” As at press time, no official statement had been issued by PDP’s national secretariat regarding next steps.

The court’s decision to fast-track the hearing means that arguments from all parties will be heard within a condensed timetable in the coming weeks. Political observers say the outcome could determine whether the party emerges united or further fragmented ahead of major national polls.

Online bettors in Lagos adopt new bonus strategies, with experts warning on bankroll management as tournament drives increased activity

Football fans and online bettors in Lagos have intensified their participation in live betting during the ongoing FIFA World Cup, following the launch of the 1xBet World Win 2026 promotion. The surge in betting activity comes as punters seek to take advantage of special bonuses and fast-changing odds tied to the global tournament.

The World Cup has brought a sharp increase in daily matches and real-time odds movements, with many Nigerians turning to platforms like 1xBet for live wagers. The World Win 2026 promo, which offers rewards through a system called ‘1xCoin’, has attracted both new and experienced bettors seeking extra value from their stakes.

According to online betting guides circulated this week, punters are advised to focus on three main factors before placing live bets: understanding the match situation, evaluating whether odds accurately reflect risk, and setting a clear tournament budget. With matches taking place nearly every day, industry observers say live betting requires discipline to avoid impulsive decisions driven by shifting odds or promotional incentives.

A Lagos-based gaming analyst said, “Many bettors are drawn by the promise of quick bonuses during tournaments like the World Cup, but it is important they approach each bet with a clear plan and strict bankroll control.” The analyst added that while promotions can offer added excitement, they should not replace sound betting judgement.

As at Friday, major betting operators reported increased engagement across Nigeria’s South-West region since the start of the tournament. Although some users expressed confusion about complex promo rules, platforms like 1xBet have introduced simplified guides aimed at helping punters navigate bonus mechanics without missing out on potential rewards.

Looking ahead, experts predict that betting volumes will remain high throughout the World Cup period. They urge participants to prioritise responsible gambling practices and stay informed about both game dynamics and promotional terms.

Massive exercise aims to boost merit-based advancement across states, as Federal Road Safety Corps targets improved service delivery

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has commenced its 2026 promotion examination, with over 10,000 officers and marshals participating in centres across Nigeria. The large-scale exercise kicked off on Friday, 19 June 2026, and is expected to span several days as officials from all states sit for the mandatory assessment.

According to the FRSC headquarters, the promotion examination is a key annual event in the agency’s efforts to ensure that career progression within its ranks is strictly based on merit and performance. Officers from state commands, including those in Lagos, Kano, Rivers and FCT Abuja, converged on designated testing locations early Friday morning.

The annual promotion examination has become an essential mechanism for strengthening professionalism in the corps. With road safety and accident prevention remaining a national priority amid rising traffic density on major highways, FRSC management said it is determined to raise the standard of leadership and technical expertise through regular staff evaluation.

While official statements from FRSC leadership were not immediately available at press time, insiders said the process was being closely monitored by senior officials to ensure transparency and fairness. The corps traditionally releases results within weeks of completion, with successful candidates moving up in rank following administrative approval.

Observers say the outcome of this year’s exercise will have far-reaching implications for operational efficiency as Nigeria prepares for higher vehicular traffic during upcoming festive periods. The FRSC is expected to announce details of successful candidates and subsequent deployment plans after conclusion of the examinations.
