The Manchester United legend insists the Red Devils must upgrade in goal if they want to challenge for trophies.
The Manchester United legend insists the Red Devils must upgrade in goal if they want to challenge for trophies.
Paul Scholes has poured cold water on Manchester United’s chances of winning major honours with Mads Lammens as first-choice goalkeeper, insisting the Red Devils need a truly top-class presence between the sticks if they are serious about lifting the Premier League title. The former United midfielder’s comments add to growing debate around United’s squad rebuild and what it will take to restore the club’s glory days.
While Scholes’ exact words and the context of his remarks were not quoted in available reports, his claim was clear: Manchester United, according to him, cannot win the title with Lammens as their number one. There were no statistics or specific match incidents provided to support his opinion, nor was there any direct reaction from club officials or Lammens himself at press time.
For Nigerian Premier League fans who follow Manchester United closely, Scholes’ opinion will spark plenty of conversation. The Red Devils have struggled for consistency in recent seasons, with their goalkeeping situation often under scrutiny. Many still remember when David De Gea or Edwin van der Sar provided world-class reassurance at the back. Now, with Lammens under the spotlight, questions remain whether he can step up to that historic standard.
Neither Manchester United manager nor any member of the coaching staff had issued a public response to Scholes’ criticism by press time. No statement from Mads Lammens was available either.
Manchester United’s next fixture will offer another chance for Lammens to prove himself — though details of their upcoming match were not included in available reports.

Stanley Nwabali has been handed the starting spot in goal, while Maduka Okoye is missing from the squad as Kelechi Iheanacho leads a refreshed Super Eagles line-up against Russia. The final score and goalscorers were not reported at press time, but the selection marks a significant shift for Nigeria’s national team.
The Super Eagles, under their current management, have opted for notable changes in their starting eleven.
