Concerns mount as former Super Eagles star questions the financial reality of head coach Eric Chelle’s reported deal
A Super Eagles legend has voiced strong concerns about the financial terms of head coach Eric Chelle’s newly signed contract, warning that ‘Nigeria cannot sustain that payment.’ The specific contract details, including salary figures and duration, were not disclosed in the available reports.
The statement from the unnamed former player comes amid growing debate about the sustainability of high-profile coaching appointments for Nigeria’s national team. While many fans had welcomed Chelle’s arrival and hoped his experience would help push the Super Eagles to greater heights, this intervention throws a spotlight on the burden such contracts could place on Nigerian football finances.
For supporters of the Super Eagles, the warning brings back memories of past financial disputes between coaches and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), with delayed salary payments and contract terminations casting long shadows over previous regimes. The call for caution suggests a need for transparency and planning if Nigeria wants to avoid repeating history.
Neither Eric Chelle nor any official from the NFF had issued a response at press time. The identity of the Super Eagles legend making these claims was also not confirmed in available reports.
The Super Eagles are set to continue their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification campaign in coming weeks. All eyes will be on how both Chelle and the NFF manage expectations on and off the pitch as pressure mounts ahead of their next fixture.
