Outspan Nigeria reaffirms commitment to inclusive dairy sector through backward integration, focuses on women empowerment in Kano
Outspan Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of Olam Food Ingredients (OFI), marked the 2026 World Milk Day in Kano State by spotlighting the vital contributions of women dairy farmers and pledging continued investment in Nigeria’s local dairy value chain. The event, held recently in Kano, brought together stakeholders from across the agricultural sector to celebrate progress and outline new initiatives for rural communities.
During the commemoration, Outspan Nigeria emphasised its ongoing support for a more inclusive and productive dairy sector, particularly through strategic backward integration. The company’s Manager of Backward Integration Programme (Dairy), Dr Isah Abukakar, explained that their approach is anchored on genetic improvement, feed support, animal health enhancement, and livelihood initiatives for pastoralist communities. “We are enhancing breed quality through artificial insemination, helping farmers achieve higher milk yields,” Abukakar said at the event.
Dairy production remains a key driver of rural development in Nigeria, providing essential nutrition while creating jobs in farming, transportation, processing and marketing. Experts at the event noted that increased productivity in the sector can expand nutrient availability nationwide and raise household incomes for thousands of families, especially women who form a significant portion of the smallholder dairy workforce.
World Milk Day serves as an annual platform for government agencies and private sector partners to assess progress and encourage further investment. This year’s focus on women aligns with broader efforts to address gender gaps in agriculture and ensure equitable access to resources and training. Participants at the Kano event called for more partnerships aimed at strengthening local value chains and improving market access for female farmers.
With Outspan Nigeria’s renewed commitment to supporting women and rural communities through targeted interventions, stakeholders expect that sustained investment will help bridge supply gaps in local milk production while empowering women farmers across the North-West.

Island nation secure vital point, boosting hopes of advancing as they stun former champions in dramatic encounter
Cape Verde stunned football fans on Monday as the national team forced a 2–2 draw against Uruguay in their FIFA World Cup group stage match. The thrilling contest took place at a neutral venue, where the underdogs from West Africa twice came from behind to share the spoils with the South American giants.
The match opened with Uruguay taking an early lead, but Cape Verde responded swiftly to level the score. Uruguay again went ahead, only for Cape Verde to show resilience and net another equaliser in the second half. The result left both teams with a point each, keeping qualification hopes alive for Cape Verde, who are making waves at this tournament.
This outcome marks one of the most remarkable results for Cape Verde on the world stage and is significant given Uruguay’s pedigree as former world champions. For many Nigerians and African football followers, Cape Verde’s performance serves as encouragement that smaller nations can compete with global heavyweights when given the opportunity.
There were no immediate official statements from either team’s coaches after the final whistle. However, analysts have praised Cape Verde’s tactical discipline and fighting spirit throughout the match. Uruguayan supporters were left disappointed by their side’s inability to close out victory despite holding the lead twice during the game.
With this draw, Cape Verde will look to build momentum as they prepare for their remaining group fixtures. The result also puts pressure on Uruguay, who now face an uphill task to secure progression. Football enthusiasts across Africa will be watching keenly to see if Cape Verde can continue their impressive run at this year’s World Cup.
