Event set for June 19 draws on Scandinavian hygge to celebrate cross-cultural connections in Nigerian hospitality sector

Anita Athena Ibru, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s hospitality industry, is set to launch a special Midsummer’s Eve themed event at Federal Palace, Victoria Island, Lagos, on June 19. The initiative, inspired by the Danish and Norwegian concept of hygge as well as global summer traditions, aims to foster connections between Nigerian culture and international guests.

The week-long programme will mark the start of the season with activities designed to showcase both Nigerian narratives and influences from other cultures. Speaking ahead of the launch, Ibru explained that Federal Palace has become known for its commitment to celebrating diverse traditions. “At Federal Palace, we are recognised for celebrating the narratives of Nigerian culture, but we are equally intentional – and curious about the traditions of other cultures,” she said during an interview.

The Midsummer’s Eve event will offer visitors a blend of experiences reflecting both local and international customs. According to Ibru, Nigerians’ openness to global influences is already visible in menus and social spaces across Lagos. She noted that many guests at the hotel come from different parts of the world, making such cross-cultural events both timely and relevant.

Industry stakeholders say such initiatives help position Lagos as a leading destination for hospitality in West Africa. No official statement has been issued by state authorities regarding the event, but organisers expect strong interest from both local residents and expatriates.

The Midsummer’s Eve celebration is scheduled to become an annual fixture at Federal Palace if successful this year. Organisers have indicated that similar themed events may be introduced in future seasons to further promote cultural exchange within Nigeria’s hospitality sector.

Police say investigation is ongoing after suspect allegedly murdered and buried victim without notifying family or authorities

Police in Delta State have arrested a man in Warri South Local Government Area over the alleged killing and secret burial of his girlfriend. The incident reportedly took place earlier this week, with authorities stating that the suspect did not inform either the deceased’s family or law enforcement about the burial.

According to police sources, officers launched an investigation after receiving information that the woman had gone missing. Preliminary findings indicate that the suspect may have been involved in her death and subsequently buried her body without following due process. The police said they are treating the case as a suspected homicide pending further investigation.

Cases of gender-based violence have continued to raise concern across Nigeria, with recent incidents sparking public outrage and calls for more decisive action by security agencies. This latest case has drawn attention to the need for improved community vigilance and better cooperation between residents and law enforcement, particularly in urban areas like Warri where such incidents can go undetected.

Delta State Police Command spokesperson said, “We are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident. The suspect is in custody and will be charged as soon as investigation is concluded.” As at the time of filing this report, details about the identity of the victim and motive behind the alleged act have not been made public.

The police urged members of the public to come forward with any information that might assist ongoing investigations. Meanwhile, advocacy groups have renewed calls for enhanced protection of women and stricter punishment for perpetrators of violence against women in Delta State and beyond.

Super Eagles forward Simy Nwankwo is expected back in Nigeria after a successful football season in Saudi Arabia, sources confirmed on Monday. The striker, who has been plying his trade in the Saudi Pro League, is returning home following a campaign marked by remarkable scoring form.

Nwankwo’s return comes after completing his commitments with his Saudi club, where he registered a standout performance throughout the just-concluded season. While details of his next move remain unannounced, his arrival in Nigeria has generated anticipation among local fans and observers of the national team.

The experienced striker has been a regular feature for the Super Eagles, contributing to Nigeria’s recent international fixtures. His prolific run abroad underlines the growing impact of Nigerian players in Middle Eastern leagues, a trend that continues to draw attention from football stakeholders at home and abroad.

Though neither Nwankwo nor officials from the Nigeria Football Federation have issued a formal statement regarding his return or future plans, expectations are high that he may be involved in upcoming national assignments. Rivers Police Begin Statewide Clampdown on Vehicles With Obscured Number Plates

Commissioner of Police orders immediate enforcement as IGP Disu targets rising security threats linked to unidentified vehicles

The Rivers State Police Command has commenced a major enforcement operation against vehicles with covered, defaced, unauthorised or missing number plates across the state, effective Monday, 15 June 2026. The crackdown follows a directive from Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, aimed at curbing criminal activities by ensuring all vehicles on public roads are easily identifiable.

According to a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, the operation is being coordinated by the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju. All Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers in Rivers have been directed to begin immediate implementation of the order. The police warned that vehicles found with covered or non-standard number plates risk being impounded and their owners prosecuted under existing laws.

The initiative comes amid growing concerns about the use of obscured number plates by individuals seeking to evade law enforcement or engage in unlawful acts within Rivers State and neighbouring South-South states. Authorities believe that proper vehicle identification is essential for effective policing and crime prevention in the region.

“This exercise forms part of broader efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to improve security surveillance and deny criminals opportunity to conceal their identities while operating,” Kaborlo said in the statement. The command stressed that no vehicle would be exempted from the checks, and called on residents to cooperate with officers during the period of heightened enforcement.

The police assured that normal traffic flow would be maintained as much as possible, but urged motorists to regularise their vehicle documentation immediately. As at press time, opposition parties and civil society groups had not issued formal statements on the measure.
