Communications ministry says majority of Nigerians back stricter controls on children’s online access at Lagos roundtable

The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy has revealed that over 83 percent of Nigerians support new regulations to restrict children’s access to social media platforms. The findings were presented during a roundtable on child online safety held in Lagos on Thursday, highlighting growing national concerns about the impact of digital platforms on young people.

According to the survey, titled ‘Proposed Social Media Age Regulation in Nigeria’, 64.8 percent of respondents backed outright regulation of children’s social media use, while an additional 18.6 percent favoured some form of restriction. The survey, which gathered responses from 585 participants nationwide, focused on issues such as exposure to harmful content, digital addiction and existing legal frameworks.

The results were announced by Kasim Sodangi, Senior Special Adviser to the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, who explained that the consultation was part of ongoing efforts to develop policy options for safeguarding minors online. The event was organised in collaboration with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, bringing together stakeholders from government and civil society.

This development comes as the United Kingdom considers implementing stricter rules on children’s use of social media. Similar debates are gaining momentum in Nigeria, where parents and advocacy groups have raised alarm over online risks faced by minors. The survey reflects rising demand for government intervention to address issues such as cyberbullying and inappropriate content.

Officials from the communications ministry said further consultations will be held with technology companies, parents and education sector leaders before any final policy is adopted. Stakeholders at the Lagos meeting called for clear enforcement mechanisms and public awareness campaigns to ensure safe digital experiences for Nigerian youths.

Police say investigation is ongoing after suspect allegedly murdered and buried victim without notifying family or authorities

Police in Delta State have arrested a man in Warri South Local Government Area over the alleged killing and secret burial of his girlfriend. The incident reportedly took place earlier this week, with authorities stating that the suspect did not inform either the deceased’s family or law enforcement about the burial.

According to police sources, officers launched an investigation after receiving information that the woman had gone missing. Preliminary findings indicate that the suspect may have been involved in her death and subsequently buried her body without following due process. The police said they are treating the case as a suspected homicide pending further investigation.

Cases of gender-based violence have continued to raise concern across Nigeria, with recent incidents sparking public outrage and calls for more decisive action by security agencies. This latest case has drawn attention to the need for improved community vigilance and better cooperation between residents and law enforcement, particularly in urban areas like Warri where such incidents can go undetected.

Delta State Police Command spokesperson said, “We are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident. The suspect is in custody and will be charged as soon as investigation is concluded.” As at the time of filing this report, details about the identity of the victim and motive behind the alleged act have not been made public.

The police urged members of the public to come forward with any information that might assist ongoing investigations. Meanwhile, advocacy groups have renewed calls for enhanced protection of women and stricter punishment for perpetrators of violence against women in Delta State and beyond.

Rivers Police Begin Statewide Clampdown on Vehicles With Obscured Number Plates

Commissioner of Police orders immediate enforcement as IGP Disu targets rising security threats linked to unidentified vehicles

The Rivers State Police Command has commenced a major enforcement operation against vehicles with covered, defaced, unauthorised or missing number plates across the state, effective Monday, 15 June 2026. The crackdown follows a directive from Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, aimed at curbing criminal activities by ensuring all vehicles on public roads are easily identifiable.

According to a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, the operation is being coordinated by the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju. All Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers in Rivers have been directed to begin immediate implementation of the order. The police warned that vehicles found with covered or non-standard number plates risk being impounded and their owners prosecuted under existing laws.

The initiative comes amid growing concerns about the use of obscured number plates by individuals seeking to evade law enforcement or engage in unlawful acts within Rivers State and neighbouring South-South states. Authorities believe that proper vehicle identification is essential for effective policing and crime prevention in the region.

“This exercise forms part of broader efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to improve security surveillance and deny criminals opportunity to conceal their identities while operating,” Kaborlo said in the statement. The command stressed that no vehicle would be exempted from the checks, and called on residents to cooperate with officers during the period of heightened enforcement.

The police assured that normal traffic flow would be maintained as much as possible, but urged motorists to regularise their vehicle documentation immediately. As at press time, opposition parties and civil society groups had not issued formal statements on the measure.
