NYSC DG Olakunle Nafiu Warns Corps Members Nationwide to Shun Politics Ahead of 2027 Elections

NYSC leadership urges strict neutrality, bars political engagement online or offline as preparations for 2027 polls intensify

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier-General Olakunle Nafiu, has issued a strong warning to corps members across Nigeria, advising them to avoid involvement in partisan politics as the country begins early preparations for the 2027 general elections. Nafiu delivered the caution during recent orientation exercises in states such as Zamfara and Niger, stressing that NYSC members must uphold neutrality to safeguard the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process.

According to NYSC management, corps members are routinely deployed as ad-hoc staff for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during election periods, serving in sensitive roles like presiding officers and polling assistants. The DG stated that any form of political activity, including campaigning or public endorsement of candidates—whether physically or on social media—could compromise not only individual corps members but also undermine public trust in the electoral system.

Nafiu’s renewed emphasis on non-partisanship comes at a time when political activities are increasing nationwide and preparations for the next election cycle are already underway. As millions of young Nigerians remain highly engaged online, NYSC officials noted that digital behaviour is now under scrutiny. “Corps members must avoid making political posts or sharing content that could be linked to any party or candidate,” Nafiu said at one orientation camp, highlighting the risks posed by social media engagement.

The warning reiterates long-standing NYSC regulations that prohibit corps members from participating in party politics throughout their service year. Officials say this measure is necessary because corps members are trusted with key election duties and any perceived bias could erode confidence in Nigeria’s democracy. “Their role as INEC ad-hoc staff demands complete impartiality,” an NYSC statement noted.

As Nigeria moves closer to another general election season, institutions like NYSC and INEC are taking steps to reinforce expectations around neutrality among all personnel involved in election logistics. While reminders about non-partisanship are not new, observers say the current climate calls for even greater vigilance to maintain the integrity of national service and ensure free and fair elections. The NYSC says it expects all serving youth corps members to remain symbols of unity, discipline, and impartiality during their national assignment.

Commission moves sensitive and non-sensitive items to local councils as state prepares for crucial June 22 vote

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the distribution of election materials across Ekiti State, ahead of the governorship election slated for Saturday, June 22. The process began on Thursday, with officials dispatching both sensitive and non-sensitive items to various local government areas as part of preparations to ensure a smooth and credible poll.

According to INEC, the early movement of materials is aimed at preventing last-minute logistical challenges that could affect voting processes on election day. The commission stated that ballot papers, result sheets, and other essential materials are being transported under tight security to designated collation centres across all 16 local councils in the state.

This development comes as political parties and stakeholders intensify their mobilisation efforts across Ekiti, a key South-West state. The governorship race has drawn significant attention due to its potential impact on regional power dynamics and party fortunes ahead of the 2027 general elections. Analysts note that efficient distribution of electoral materials is crucial for building public confidence following recent concerns over late arrivals and missing items in past elections.

INEC officials have reiterated their commitment to transparency and fairness throughout the process. The commission urged residents to remain law-abiding and assured voters that necessary arrangements have been made to guarantee safe and timely delivery of all materials. As at Thursday afternoon, there were no reports of disruptions or incidents affecting the distribution exercise.

With just days before Ekiti voters head to the polls, attention remains on INEC’s logistics operation and the readiness of security agencies deployed across the state. Observers say the conduct of this election will serve as an important test case for Nigeria’s broader electoral reforms.

Renewed Hope team says Abia State witnessing positive transformation, credits Otti’s policies for steady development

The Renewed Hope Presidential Media Team has commended Abia State for what it described as remarkable progress under the administration of Governor Alex Otti. The team made this assertion on Thursday, highlighting visible improvements since Otti assumed office in the South-East state.

According to the media team, the strides recorded in Abia reflect effective governance and a clear commitment to transforming key sectors. The statement noted that critical infrastructure and service delivery have improved, attributing these gains to the governor’s leadership approach and policy direction.

Abia State has faced longstanding challenges, including poor road networks, inadequate healthcare facilities, and unemployment. Observers say recent efforts by the current administration have begun to address these issues, with the government prioritising infrastructural rehabilitation and public service reforms.

The Renewed Hope Presidential Media Team stressed that their assessment is based on observed developments and ongoing projects in Abia. They maintained that such progress aligns with national expectations for state-level performance. While some critics argue that more needs to be done in certain areas, the team said Otti’s tenure has already set a new standard for governance in the region.

With the spotlight now on further delivery of campaign promises, residents and political stakeholders are watching to see how Governor Otti’s administration will sustain its current momentum. The media team expressed optimism that continued focus on transparency and people-oriented policies could consolidate recent achievements across Abia State.
