The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended a staff member of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) alongside two others for alleged money laundering and smuggling of precious minerals at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano. The arrests took place on 11 June 2026 during a surveillance operation by EFCC operatives targeting illegal movement of minerals and foreign currency through Nigeria’s airports.
According to EFCC sources, the suspects — Ali Baffa, an Inspector with the Aviation Security section of FAAN, Aushabu Nasidi, and Mukhtar Muhammad Dan Zaria — were intercepted while attempting to move unprocessed gold bars and foreign currencies into the country. Preliminary investigations revealed that Baffa allegedly concealed 22.2 kilograms of gold bars valued at over ₦4.4 billion inside his trousers in a bid to evade airport security screening.
The anti-graft commission disclosed that the arrests followed a recent directive from its chairman to all zonal directorates, mandating intensified efforts against the smuggling of mineral resources and bulk cash via Nigeria’s international airports. Mineral smuggling has remained a major concern for government, as it drains critical revenue from the solid minerals sector and undermines efforts to grow non-oil exports.
While details on the other suspects’ alleged roles were not made public as at press time, EFCC sources said further investigation is ongoing to unravel the full network behind the smuggling attempt. The commission has also warned that officers involved in collusion or aiding such crimes would face prosecution.
With this latest interception, stakeholders have renewed calls for improved airport security protocols and better monitoring of personnel. The EFCC stated that all three suspects are in custody as investigations continue, with possible charges expected upon completion of findings.
