The Oyo State Police Command has apprehended four individuals suspected of armed robbery and secret cult activities during an early morning operation at Soka area in Ibadan on Friday, 10th June 2026. The arrests were carried out around 6:00 a.m. by operatives from the Violent Crime Response Unit, acting on intelligence about a criminal syndicate terrorising residents in various parts of the Ibadan metropolis.

According to a statement issued by DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Oyo State, officers stormed the identified hideout where the suspects had gathered and successfully effected their arrest. The police also recovered a pistol from the scene during the raid. “The Oyo State Police Command, in its sustained commitment to combating violent crime and ensuring safety of residents across the state, has recorded another significant operational breakthrough,” Ayanlade stated.

The incident comes amid ongoing concerns about rising violent crime and cult-related activities in major South-West urban centres. Residents of Ibadan have repeatedly called for improved security patrols following reports of robberies and attacks linked to secret cult groups operating in densely populated neighbourhoods like Soka.

DSP Ayanlade emphasised that the latest arrests highlight the command’s resolve to dismantle organised criminal networks. “Our operatives acted swiftly based on credible intelligence about these notorious elements,” he said, urging community members to continue sharing useful information with security agencies. No injuries or fatalities were reported during the operation, and investigations are ongoing to identify further members of the syndicate.

The police have assured that efforts will be intensified to ensure that all those involved in violent crimes are brought to book. The suspects are expected to be charged after completion of preliminary investigations. The opposition could not be immediately reached for comment regarding recent security trends in Ibadan.

No fewer than five persons have been confirmed dead while eight others sustained injuries following a multiple-vehicle crash along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Friday evening. The incident occurred close to the Satguru Maharaj Ji Village axis in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State, according to emergency officials who responded to the scene.

The accident involved six trucks, two Toyota Hilux vans and two cars. According to responders from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Oyo State Fire Service, the incident began when a truck suffered brake failure and rammed into another parked truck. This triggered a chain reaction, with several vehicles becoming involved in the collision.

The force of the impact led to a fire outbreak, which further complicated rescue operations as emergency teams battled both flames and wreckage. Personnel from Oyo State Fire Service and FRSC arrived promptly to manage the situation, contain the fire, and evacuate victims from the affected vehicles.

Chairman of Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, confirmed that five bodies were recovered from the site of the crash. He stated that eight injured persons were rescued and taken to hospital for medical attention. “Upon arrival, we discovered that the accident involved six trucks, including…” Akinwande said at the scene.

Officials urged motorists plying the Lagos-Ibadan corridor to maintain safe speeds and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on long journeys. As at press time, clearing operations were ongoing at the accident site to restore normal traffic flow on this critical expressway connecting South-West states.
